My wife was ill last year and couldn’t fly. BA extended her Gold Guest List membership by a year upon production of evidence of her medical condition. BA were very understanding, which was appreciated.

It’s not very exclusive -I’ve flown Virgin once, in 2005, and I received an invitation.

As long as the service charge is discretionary, no VAT is due. It doesn’t matter whether or not the charge collected is then passed on to employees.

The other main difference is that a resort fee is a set fee whereas a service charge is added a percentage to the price paid.

And a service fee is discretionary.

The link does expire after a few weeks. In my experience I was unable to resend the invitation from my account and had to call the GGL team to have them initiate the second invitation.

in reply to: EU261 For Delay Caused By Inbound Medical Issue

Can the OP confirm whether the medical delay was on the inbound flight to PHX? The OP said above “ BA record keeping doesn’t seem to be great either. It took about three emails before they got the correct reason for the delay (a passenger falling ill earlier the previous day of the plane’s schedule).” which suggests it was the aircraft’s flight before the inbound to PHX (the flight to/from PHX is the same day). If this is correct, BA could have allocated another aircraft at its home base at LHR to the PHX flight to reduce the delay and would be on the hook for EU261 compensation.

Apparently they were directing people to the First lounge to use the toilets yesterday morning?

I think this may have been because of a security breach at South Security yesterday morning. The whole of the South Security area was cleared and there were armed police in the CCR stopping anyone from leaving via the “Millionaire’s Door”. The CCR toilets may well have been temporarily out of bounds for the duration. All seemed to be over within 45 minutes.

I believe a German ATC strike would be an exceptional circumstance for UK261 purposes as it’s completely outside the control of the airline.
