Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

  • The 15 nights count towards your annual nights tally. But the Plat Gold status is merely gifted to you without the requisite nights. So if the Bonvoy Amex 15 nights were your only nights with Marriott that year, you’d still have an overall total of 15. It’s not Gold threshold + 15

    Thought as much! Thank you.

Are you all using Google flights as the initial filter, and fine tuning on BA site? Wondering where to start, geographically, but more specifically scoping the low TP to cash ratios.

Just returned Booked 4 single nights. Got the benefits in each…..
Bellagio. Upgraded to biggest suite ever
    Waldorf Astoria. Best food.
    Crockfords (my fave)
    Palazzo. (least fave)

Wow 4/4 on FHR, ha. That is serious travel benefits. I thought I was good doing 2 hotels over 3 nights.

Yes. All booked through FHR. Via the concierge service who recommended the best rooms to book that were upgradable. Excellent service.

I’m about to hit the £20k spend on my BA AMEX. The 241 in economy only is worthless to me so going to upgrade to BAPP. Am I right in saying they’ve changed T&Cs now so you don’t get the fee refunded pro rata’d. It looks like it’s going to cost me £250 just to get a 241 voucher I can use in CW and with slightly more availability. Sounds steep.

    I’ll give you £250 for a twofer…….no brainer…..

    Yes you can.

No your status doesn’t extend to them.

They will earn the TPs as they are the ones flying.

Slightly more nuanced….but if you book a cash flight for them. will it count as a revenue booking credited to you if you want to match status with BAEC?

Is a referral possible here or is the bonus only available from the BA exec club link?

    Royback

Thanks for your advice, I have to transfer them by Wednesday so I guess I’m best to transfer them to my BA account. I have 170000 points there already and have not been away for a couple of years so should think about having a break…

Just keep a free card going and keep them till you need them?

Try DXB to a regional like MAN via LHR for extra availability and travel HBO…..

Thunderstorms in the summer are not extraordinary.

No. From my experience last week. The LAX AIRPORT HILTON hotel would not recognise my gold status at all. No points. No benefits. No credits.

in reply to: How much money and time spent to renew status?
    Royback

Hey all. I’m not looking for a “it’s not worth it” or “why would you bother” or “depends how often you fly”… And especially no “why keep flying with BA” type responses.

But for those that have done tier point runs, how much have you spent in time and cash to maintain/upgrade status?

    I’m genuinely looking at doing:
    LHR-MAN-LHR-SOF-LHR.
Over three days (can’t really justify any more annual leave to actually see Sofia properly).
Flights £400, plus about £200 for 2 nights hotels.

Have you watched Matts Planet? Some great detailed videos on this very subject. Disclosure. I’m a Patreon. I also did a Sofia trip in July. It was lovely. Do you have an Amex Plat by any chance? The hotel represents ridiculous value

    Hi folks,

I’m looking to travel from London to Dubai in November, and I’d like to burn down some Membership Rewards and travel in Business.

What would people recommend, and how can I check availability pre-transfer?

    Tim

Go via Newark in the apartment on Ethiad.

in reply to: UK transfer bonuses?
    Royback

@Royback There are other airlines that partner with Amex UK, so you can still transfer your MRs at 1:1 to Air France, Cathay, Delta, Emirates, Etihad, Finnair, KLM, Qantas, Singapore etc. to book flights, you just likely won’t get a bonus when you do.

    Phew….Cheers…….

Thanks. How do you discover such fares? Building a TP run/optimising a trip with ITA Matrix? Is there a starting point to find something so low to work with?

    Royback

No. This is how Amex UK balances the books. Transfers to miles cost them a lot more than gift cards etc and they won’t encourage it.

They will be one if Qatar is added as a one off but it seems BA may have blocked this. All other countries are adding Qatar.

heck….just accumulated 150k mr points. Hoping to use them for non virgin/avios redemption! Oops…is there no work around?

in reply to: 241 companion voucher query
    Royback

Hopefully, for most people an error by BA like this doesn’t present too much of a dilemma. You have the choice of defrauding or attempting to defraud BA by intentionally using the voucher twice, something that might or might not get picked up before, during or after travel. Alternatively, you can alert BA so they take the voucher or do nothing, hope your missing voucher trip goes smoothly and let the voucher expire.

PS. the option of “playing dumb” suggested above won’t get anyone very far!

Whilst I don’t disagree with honesty being the best policy. There is an argument whereby BA actually benefit. The OP is far likely to spend more money with BA to use the “error” voucher than by not doing. A win win. Bank error in your favour. Collect 200 as it goes in Monopoly

I think I unintentionally give off ‘Don’t speak to me’ vibes as I only met a lovely man called Roy and his daughter. Would love to have met more of you. I was sat on an outside sofa for the first half being shy and eyeing harissa canapés though! Spent the last half an hour before/during raffle standing chatting at a table with Rob’s delightful wife Connie. Lovely evening.

Amy. It was great chatting to you. You give off beautiful vibes. Lots of us geeks are very introverted. I usually hate gatherings where I know nobody. Scares me s..tress. Amy B too! We made a plan to talk to as many Reps as possible.

It really helped that Rhys put out the instructions telling us that the reps wanted to speak to us. That gave us the strength to approach people. We met you, Connie and some lovely people.

Wonderful too to meet Matt from Matt’s Planet on YouTube. Love his videos……
