Agreed. Don’t worry about this credit ‘score’. If you’re really paranoid maybe just pay off the card as you go so there’s never a balance.

Thanks. Yes I have the Amex offer saved too.

Regarding compensation and delays, the rules clearly displayed anywhere for Avios flights?

I’ll hope that it’s changed back to the 777 in that case or by miracle a 787-8 with CS is ready in time. Highly doubt both and look forward to the 20 year old configuration. Not quite as bad as the Virgin 787 coffin seat I suppose?

Oh dear. Well with both BA flights that day on the decrepit old club world and essentially
no Tokyo flights at all with club suite in November then it looks like there’s no way out of it.

When is your flight? There’s absolutely no availability for mid November including using the companion voucher. It’s frustrating they’d switch to such a crap and old product on such a key route.

I’ve not even been notified. Should I have been? I hadn’t selected seats as I’m bronze.

Checked again today and my salary is correct. Weird.

Out of interest what’s the prize for all this spending to achieve GGL? The Concorde lounge access or is there anything actually worth all this extra spend to hit this goal?

At this point I don’t imagine there are any London to Tokyo flight options with Avios, even with partner airlines. What are the most likely alternatives which include stopovers?

Do you have enough Amex points to transfer to Asia Miles? There’s plenty of availability on CX in J if you go via HKG for the date range you’re looking for

Thankfully my issue has been sorted so my original bookings can remain. On your point though, are these London to HKG flights? And is it better value redeeming Amex points for Asia miles vs using Avios for CX? Or is availability much better doing it direct?

It also seems all the Qatar flights have to connect via Doha. I don’t mind flying from Japan to Europe with Qatar but are there any direct flights or is it all via Doha? That means two stopovers.

Thanks. So which hubs work for JAL and Qatar? Frankfurt, Munich, where else? I’m somewhat keen on Finnair but wasn’t loving their seat for a 7 hour daytime flight. I know they fly from Helsinki, Stockholm, Copenhagen?

I can barely find any flights back to London, was hoping to replicate my booked return flight of Osaka to Doha to London. There are some Osaka flights but I literally can’t find anything on Qatar from Doha to London for 2 people in October/November. Only BA flights which cost way more.

I’ve also applied to samsonite today now as it’s under warranty but I feel like they will worm out of any claim that may be wear and tear.

Doesn’t the foreign exchange fee with Amex est up a good chunk of the benefits from FHR? I’ve never understood why it makes sense to make any international hotel with Amex on checkout.

Has anyone successfully got another retention offer (ie spend £3k to unlock Avios) after a previous offer? I was going to renew anyway but accepted this offer before the anniversary. Wondering if I could get it again in the new card year with pro rata refunds still being a thing.

Shame. Glad I nabbed one. Qatar one way without stopover is now cheaper

    sturgeon 205 posts

Do you both have other Amex cards or only platinum? The randomness of who gets what offers is odd

    sturgeon 205 posts

Signed up in January and just hit the £10k. I’d tried it on a few times before now for a retention but no luck. I assume as I’ve now hit £10k I’m worth retaining, they just offered 50k on live chat which is very decent.

Obviously now taking the piss but when can I try for another retention? In a few months time or only just before my anniversary? I was about to switch back to my BA Amex for the better earning rate. Also as experiences on here seem to suggest spend volume on platinum doesn’t seem to correlate with retention offers so me putting another £5-10k through I’m not sure will help.

It’s fairly good but the insurance isn’t needed for me as I think I’m covered about three times over with Amex platinum, and general travel insurance.

The return rate is about 2.5%. I find there to be too few venues available, often popular venues are chosen and even booking within the month is tricky. And they’re dotted around London and rarely in central. Some online redemption offers too.

Not bad overall but I’d really like an option without the insurance as I feel it’s pushing the price up unnecessarily.

Lots of dates, also available from Stockholm ( which has cheaper airport hotels)

I was also looking for a tier point trip, saw the BA glitch deal for £1k return from London which then sold out whilst I was considering if I actually want to go to Doha for 5 nights. I was a bit annoyed I missed it but it felt unnecessary on reflection.

Then I saw this post, have booked a flight from ARN to DOH next month for 20k and £50, all their planes have the new business seats. I’m returning directly to London with Qatar, 43k and £85 so normal pricing. Doesn’t seem to be q suite but the 787 setup and surely that’s also pretty good?

The positioning flight to ARN is a bit annoying as I think I’ll need to fly the night before to avoid the panic of a delay or missing the connection but airport hotels seem cheap.

The 787-9 has the new Q-suite lite which is lovely, door etc. The 787-8 is the open seat same as on the A380, not quite as nice but still very comfortable.

Fair enough, it’s a 787-8 which looks fine to me. Knowing how many times they change equipment I wouldn’t have got too excited about Q Suite. I have two flights later this year supposedly on Q Suite. I’ve not flown with Qatar before so looking forward to it, as well as testing out Finnair business for the first time inclusive of the new seat. I am a bit sceptical about the lack of recline though.

I’ve noticed over the last 2 weeks that the ‘speedy’ award retailers haven’t posted Avios yet. They all tracked overnight but nothing paid yet, it’s normally 72 hours. Anyone else?

So this is cancellable within 24 hours for no charge? What’s the charge after then?

Was close to booking the BA ‘error’ fare last night so this looks even better. Will these include Finnairs new seat? How do we find this out?

Great, thank you. I’ll book the outbound flights separately then as those won’t change and I may chance the lowest Avios highest cash price for the return flights.

Do economy redemption flights on BA include hold luggage up to 23kg? Or just carry on luggage?

    sturgeon 205 posts

    Thanks all! Sounds easy enough.
