Because they told me to try the transaction again as it had been returned to the merchant, is that OK?! It wasn’t a problem, I paid it off straight away.

Wish I’d thought to look on here before spending ages on the phone to BC. I did another large transaction after all the May 1st ones had vanished, and then woke up the next day to find they had come back, and put me £10k over my limit.

Japan with a 20 month old? Don’t waste your money IMO, wait until they are old enough to interact and enjoy it (and not need naps, nappies etc)!

    :tumbleweed:

So, now that we’ve seen there was a front page HFP story about paying HMRC using Curve/Barclaycard Avios, is there anyone who thinks there’s a reason this isn’t allowed?

My wife cancelled last week, as we didn’t think we could do £30k in a year between the two of us. She was offered 5k for £3k.

Ironic that @JDB “boasts” here that he and his wife use Fronted for £36k of tax payments per year

    https://www.headforpoints.com/2024/01/19/how-to-pay-your-hmrc-bill-with-a-credit-card/comment-page-3/#comments

which is exactly what I’m doing.

Apparently when he does it is a “no brainer” but when I do it “it feels like Creation all over again and these threads do nothing but hasten the demise of the loophole”

    Another eye roll.

Eye roll that it’s a boast.

Most of that was done when the limit was £10k, now I do £3k per month. I’m sure I’m one of many people doing the same, I’m not being clever.

I wasn’t aware though that is is a disallowed transaction from Barclay’s point of view, where does it say that? I may well stop if so, as I don’t really want to jeopardise my whole account.

I’ve put probably £60k through fronted and Avios Barclaycard, all HMRC. So far so good, touch wood.

Why do they exclude all this stuff, do card companies get smaller fees for certain types of transaction?

Oh wow, that’s quite the list. What a waste of time.

Where does it say HMRC is excluded, I haven’t seen any terms for the card? Will be totally useless for me if so

I’m assuming so, but don’t know for certain yet

    There is no underlying card

Just made a test payment to HMRC, seems to work fine. Comes up as personal debit card.

How do you get the card, I can only see waitlist as well?

I don’t think so, my local PO wouldn’t allow any credit card payments of any kind towards council tax.

I have a Co-op and Spar within a few mins of the house that take Amex via paypoint so use them now.

Thanks. I’ll ask next time I’m in there, but won’t be holding my breath

I’ve paid all my council tax (almost £10k as paying for other properties as well) via Avios Barclaycard. However, I see that on the bill it says that I can also pay at a post office. Will this allow me to use Amex, I’ve never tried before? If so, this may be the difference between keeping a BAPP card for my wife and not, now that the threshold is £15k.

Not so much abused as taken full advantage of.

those are two entirely different things

Thank you. I hadn’t considered that this could be split up.

It requires being relatively on the ball though!

Why do Curve have such a low threshold?

It was abused by a few in the past. The limit was 10k until last Nov if i remember correctly. Someone has to pay for all those losses.

    abused in what way?

I just looked back in my records. They actually sent me an email, that I then replied to. Text of email was:

“We just need a little bit more information about your businesses.

Can you please reply to this email with your most recent 3 months’ business bank statements for your businesses in PDF format which were issued in the last 30 days?

These statements need to clearly show your business transactions.

Please ensure they are colour copies that clearly show the following details:
    – Bank Name
    – Business Name
    – Sort code and Account Number
    – 90 days (minimum) of transaction history relating to your business

Kindly confirm the answers to the following questions in order to send the account or a review:

    – What is your monthly Business Turnover?
    – What is the reason you are requesting a limit increase?
    – How much increase would you be expecting/want?

Once you’ve sent them through, we will do our best to get back to you within one business day!

I maxed out my card for the first 4 months I had it. £5k limit, put £20k per month through. After this, got put up to the heady heights of £7.5k. Called up, and was told that I couldn’t increase any more. Was just about to hang up when the lady said I could email in to a special department with a request. I did this, sent in a letter saying how much I wanted, why, and three months of bank statements. Within a day, they approved the request, and credit limit went up massively to the level I had asked for.

    Interesting stuff, thanks

I see. So why do we read on here people (maybe Rob?) saying things like “Amex UK can’t offer the same benefits as Amex in the USA, because their fees are capped and so can’t afford it”?

Because there are lots of other people in the credit card food chain between you using your card and the merchant getting the funds. The big one is the ‘merchant acquirer’ – people like Worldpay.

Do these people not exist in the USA?
