Just on my way home after Trip 1 to Manchester.

Thanks to @NorthernLass and @kevinchoi for the Refuge recommendation it was brilliant.! I didn’t think I’d ever say that mushrooms were addictive, but I couldn’t get enough of the crispy polyspore oyster mushrooms and brown sauce. I also had a pre-dinner drink in the public bar and the 24 hours in Paris cocktail was extraordinarily good. And what a building!

Speaking of cocktails I also squeezed in a nightcap at Schofields (thanks @Strickers!) which turned into two and I had a nice seat up at the bar nattering with the waiter. Stuck to my classic faves but gosh they were done well

Trip next month will be a One Sushi takeaway and back to Schofields to branch out try some of their house specials 🤩

I’m not a Manchester regular but have been taken to Higher Ground that offered modern very good quality food with a seasonally based menu all well prepared in house.

    Thanks, will take a look

If you are wanting a Chinese, I could recommend one. It’s a slight walk (but not too far), and it’s called Rice bowl. I have never had a bad meal there. Whenever I have gone it’s been busy and I would say it has the right atmosphere.

I need to get lunch on the second day of trip one and their lunch menu looks good, thanks!

    Schofields is a shout!

    Kala Bistro and/or Mackie Mayor?

Ooh yes one evening an old colleague also happens to be passing through Mcr, and she suggested we go to Mackie Mayor so that’s on the list. Will check out the other place thanks

Bundobust is good for a cheaper meal. For drinks check out the Grand Pacific and Schofields.

Yes Bundobust is great! I discovered it trip before last and ate there both times but thought I should probably branch out a little hence the recs request! I’ll check out those bars, thanks

I second The Refuge, will be there for my birthday weekend at the end of the month, courtesy of Emyr. I haven’t been for a while but San Carlo used to do a lovely mushroom risotto and you might spot the odd WAG! Browns has decent, reasonably priced bistro food and a nice cocktail selection, and is in a beautiful old building, formerly a bank IIRC (The Refuge is also a stunning setting – you can choose to eat in the winter garden if you like, or they sometimes have tables outside if the weather’s fine).

Thanks! I’m very close by to The Refuge and the menu and surroundings look really good, so I think that will do nicely for the second dinner

I lived in Manchester in the early/mid 00s and went back for the first time a couple of years ago, how things have changed! While I was there the WAG phenomenon seemed to really take off, and every woman under 25 was in the bars of Deansgate Locks trying to achieve WAG-dom. As for WAG-spotting I probably couldn’t tell Coleen Rooney from Coleen Nolan 🤣

Along the Oxford Road corridor, there’s The Refuge at the Kimpton Clocktower hotel, which does a nice dinner and drinks.

If you fancy something to takeaway back to the hotel, but still great quality food, then there’s One Sushi, which is also just down the road.

Thanks- I *love* sushi so will take a look

Yes, see thread below about tier points not transferring, a few people (myself included) reporting a delay in Avios transfer as well

Anyone has this issue but also not got the Avios sweep too? My sweep date is the 5th, and nothing showing yet.

My Avios sweep should have happened yesterday, perhaps today, but although they have left according to my Amex app, they’re not yet appearing in my Avios app. I wouldn’t normally be too bothered but as it includes the 50k SUB from my BAPP I will be frantically refreshing until they appear!

in reply to: Advice on card strategy since BAPP changes

Thanks, glad my strategy sounds sensible, though I didn’t know that a downgrade from Plat straight to Blue might not be an option. I’ll look into that further as I may just go straight to Blue as I have no interest in the Gold ‘perks’.

It’s just a matter of determining what order to do it in to maximise chances of acceptance for the new cards:

    1. Do I apply for the Barclaycard Plus or the Plat/Blue first?
    2. How long do I leave between each application?
    3. Should I apply before or after I downgrade the BAPP to the free? Should I also ask for a decrease in credit limit on whichever BA card I hold at the time so that I don’t have too much open credit?

Bonus went into OH’s account last night, nothing in mine yet

A thoroughly entertaining read – thank you!

Honestly, I don’t think you’ll have any issues if there’s no parental consent requirement which might get them asking questions on arrival. PDAs are generally frowned on so you won’t be different to anyone else in that respect. OH and I were probably being over-cautious, but we were quite paranoid in case we accidentally held hands in public without thinking!

Various issues aside, Dubai is a great choice for young families, I think. It was clean, safe, the people were polite and charming and there’s plenty of fun stuff to do.

I can’t remember the last time we held hands in this country so I think we’ll be ok on that front ha ha! Research so far this afternoon on the parental consent issue is mixed but this has been more from TA and other forums, will see if I can find a more official source.

Ah ok, it would just be the last thing you want at the start of your holiday for some official to start asking awkward questions!

I don’t use my husband’s surname on official documents and did wonder if we might be asked to prove that we were married (we went to Dubai and Doha in the same trip) but nobody said anything!

Yes, exactly. I’ll keep reading but I think we may conclude it’s not worth the potential hassle, and suggest we join them next time but somewhere a bit less ‘problematic’.

*Or as you’ll be in the ME, just tell them that the women in your party are the 3 wives of the man!

    Ha ha good idea lol!

I don’t think you’ll have any issues due to the relationship – your partner could be your sister-in-law for all they know, and that would explain your son having both surnames.

What I would check, though, is whether Dubai is one of those countries which requires consent from both parents for a minor to travel; it would not surprise me if this was the case, being somewhat, patriarchal, as they say! You don’t say what the legal situation with your son is, but they might start asking questions about having his father’s permission to travel.

A close friend of mine adopted her son as a single parent and carries a court document with her when she travels to show that she is her son’s sole legal guardian.

Yes, that’s a good point, thanks. I’ve heard of that being an issue but don’t know if it applies to Dubai, I’ll look that up. Without spelling out the details, his birth certificate has both of us named on it so there is no father’s permission to have! 🙂

The offer in the article is over and replaced by this new one.

Ah, I’ll be quicker off the mark next time Thanks for confirming!

The Amex spend was targeted as I remember; I think I had to spend £150 to get the 3000. I bought the mystery white case, used the MYSTERY2000 code. 2000 is credited immediately + whatever the avios value of the wine.

    Wine is fine.

Yes I’ve been lucky to get a £100 spend for 3k Avios on my BAPP! So it looks like it’s use that code on the mystery cases for the extra 2k Avios, not any of the cases as the main website article suggests then, thanks

when the first Avios is credited to it

    Clock starts from then.

Thanks @ChrisBCN I thought it might be but hoped it wasn’t!

in reply to: Transfer Avios to Iberia

Do you have any Avios in your Iberia Plus account? You will need to have an account that is open for 90 days and has at least 1 Avios in it to be able to combine.

    See the HfP link:

    https://www.headforpoints.com/2024/02/01/how-does-combine-my-avios-work-moving-avios-points-from-iberia-to-british-airways-3/

I was able to put some Avios in using a new Avios for Thoughts account to link to Iberia Plus and do the welcome survey and it deposited 100 Avios in there. Now I just need to wait 89 days or so to use it.

Does anyone know if the 90 day clock starts from when you open the account or from when the first Avios is credited to it? I didn’t manage to get any Avios in until about 3 weeks after I opened mine

    tootsci 60 posts

Activated mine by linking it to my Red by Dufry account and making a purchase in Duty Free. Points credited in 24 hours. But obviously only works if you’re passing through an airport… If you’re desperate I don’t know if you can do a Click and Collect and just don’t collect for an eventual refund and whether the Avios going in and then being clawed back would work?? Amex MR points easiest if you have them though
