Thanks, glad my strategy sounds sensible, though I didn’t know that a downgrade from Plat straight to Blue might not be an option. I’ll look into that further as I may just go straight to Blue as I have no interest in the Gold ‘perks’.

It’s just a matter of determining what order to do it in to maximise chances of acceptance for the new cards:

    1. Do I apply for the Barclaycard Plus or the Plat/Blue first?
    2. How long do I leave between each application?
    3. Should I apply before or after I downgrade the BAPP to the free? Should I also ask for a decrease in credit limit on whichever BA card I hold at the time so that I don’t have too much open credit?

Bonus went into OH’s account last night, nothing in mine yet

A thoroughly entertaining read – thank you!

Honestly, I don’t think you’ll have any issues if there’s no parental consent requirement which might get them asking questions on arrival. PDAs are generally frowned on so you won’t be different to anyone else in that respect. OH and I were probably being over-cautious, but we were quite paranoid in case we accidentally held hands in public without thinking!

Various issues aside, Dubai is a great choice for young families, I think. It was clean, safe, the people were polite and charming and there’s plenty of fun stuff to do.

I can’t remember the last time we held hands in this country so I think we’ll be ok on that front ha ha! Research so far this afternoon on the parental consent issue is mixed but this has been more from TA and other forums, will see if I can find a more official source.

Ah ok, it would just be the last thing you want at the start of your holiday for some official to start asking awkward questions!

I don’t use my husband’s surname on official documents and did wonder if we might be asked to prove that we were married (we went to Dubai and Doha in the same trip) but nobody said anything!

Yes, exactly. I’ll keep reading but I think we may conclude it’s not worth the potential hassle, and suggest we join them next time but somewhere a bit less ‘problematic’.

*Or as you’ll be in the ME, just tell them that the women in your party are the 3 wives of the man!

    Ha ha good idea lol!

I don’t think you’ll have any issues due to the relationship – your partner could be your sister-in-law for all they know, and that would explain your son having both surnames.

What I would check, though, is whether Dubai is one of those countries which requires consent from both parents for a minor to travel; it would not surprise me if this was the case, being somewhat, patriarchal, as they say! You don’t say what the legal situation with your son is, but they might start asking questions about having his father’s permission to travel.

A close friend of mine adopted her son as a single parent and carries a court document with her when she travels to show that she is her son’s sole legal guardian.

Yes, that’s a good point, thanks. I’ve heard of that being an issue but don’t know if it applies to Dubai, I’ll look that up. Without spelling out the details, his birth certificate has both of us named on it so there is no father’s permission to have! 🙂

The offer in the article is over and replaced by this new one.

Ah, I’ll be quicker off the mark next time Thanks for confirming!

The Amex spend was targeted as I remember; I think I had to spend £150 to get the 3000. I bought the mystery white case, used the MYSTERY2000 code. 2000 is credited immediately + whatever the avios value of the wine.

    Wine is fine.

Yes I’ve been lucky to get a £100 spend for 3k Avios on my BAPP! So it looks like it’s use that code on the mystery cases for the extra 2k Avios, not any of the cases as the main website article suggests then, thanks

I just hit the spend yesterday. I was assuming the 50k would all be awarded at once some time in the next few days…?

    Clock starts from then.

Thanks @ChrisBCN I thought it might be but hoped it wasn’t!

Do you have any Avios in your Iberia Plus account? You will need to have an account that is open for 90 days and has at least 1 Avios in it to be able to combine.

    See the HfP link:

    https://www.headforpoints.com/2024/02/01/how-does-combine-my-avios-work-moving-avios-points-from-iberia-to-british-airways-3/

I was able to put some Avios in using a new Avios for Thoughts account to link to Iberia Plus and do the welcome survey and it deposited 100 Avios in there. Now I just need to wait 89 days or so to use it.

Does anyone know if the 90 day clock starts from when you open the account or from when the first Avios is credited to it? I didn’t manage to get any Avios in until about 3 weeks after I opened mine

Activated mine by linking it to my Red by Dufry account and making a purchase in Duty Free. Points credited in 24 hours. But obviously only works if you’re passing through an airport… If you’re desperate I don’t know if you can do a Click and Collect and just don’t collect for an eventual refund and whether the Avios going in and then being clawed back would work?? Amex MR points easiest if you have them though

For me Uber avios track pretty much instantly which is impressive, that said, the earn rate is so low that you would have to be using it a lot for it to be making any real difference to your overall balance. Better than nothing I suppose and it all adds up!

That’s good to know, thanks. I’ll take another look at my account and see if I can figure out the problem then

in reply to: BA Shopping – Does it actually work?

It definitely does – the majority of my Avios balance has come from BA shopping over the last couple of years not flights. You have to be careful (use the link properly for tracking, no swapping of windows/tabs) and read the small print regarding exclusions and earn rate, but it is entirely possible to accumulate a healthy balance this way as I have.

The only Avios collection problems I have had have been with Uber. My accounts are connected but I have never received any of the Avios I’m supposed to. I only use Uber a few times a year, but I was going to swap to booking trains through them for the better Avios rate than The Trainline but I haven’t

Where abouts did it show up? On actual search or on a banner?

I got to it in a very roundabout way. I’ll try again and post the route if I can get there again!

So I was most interested in the 50% bonus on buying Avios and that comes up if I go to the Iberia equivalent of the BA shopping portal “Iberia Plus Store” ibplusstore.Iberia.com

Unfortunately it doesn’t appear to be on my Iberia account. I believe previously these targeted offers have been for Iberia Plus accounts with a Spanish address. I have now updated mine to a Spanish address so as not to miss out (family holiday home, not a random one)!

Definitely don’t need a Spanish address, I’m UK based and it appears in mine. Perhaps a targeted offer though (I only joined Iberia Plus a month ago or so)

Just realised I’ve got an Iberia Plus account with nothing in it.
IIRC, I would need some Avios in there already before I can use the combine Avios feature to pull a load over from BAEC.

I’m not going to be taking any Iberia cash flights anytime soon, nor hiring a car from Avis so can’t use those routes to activate the combine Avios feature.

There is an HFP article saying you can move hotel points in order to activate the combine Avios feature.
Anyone know if IHG or Hilton allows this?
I no longer have any MR sitting around, but Mrs Aston does. Don’t think she can transfer MR to my Iberia Plus account right?

EDIT: I think I can transfer 10k IHG to Iberia and receive 2k Avios but needs to be done by contacting IHG One customer services.
Can anyone confirm this would satisfy the criteria for activating there combine Avios feature? My Iberia account is a couple of years old and hasn’t seen any activity since it was created.

    Thanks

I can’t comment on the IHG points, but I will say that I recently ‘activated’ my Iberia Plus account by crediting the Avios from use of a Red by Dufry Duty Free reward card on a recent trip to Spain when I bought some perfume in Malaga airport. Can also use the RbD card at Heathrow Duty Free but not Gatwick I don’t think

I was able to book MAD – Tokyo Narita return in A350 business for just 59,500 Avios and 229.14€. Rude not to at that price! Availability wise, Tokyo often only had one reward seat in business though.

Wow! That’s a steal! And I didn’t know IB flew to Tokyo, one to make a note of as Japan is on my to-do list.

The web page PB2 linked to states:

“Remember that, like the latest promotions, the discount does not apply to all users so check if they are selected.”

Sadly, neither me nor Mrs MacK are part of that select few!

But it has remined me of what a bargain Iberia is to Puerto Rico – business at 37k plus small fees one way. I feel some winter warmth.

Have you tried to make a booking to see.

I can’t remember exactly how I found it, but I found a link when I was logged in this morning. Shame the dates don’t work for my planned trip to Peru next year 🙁

in reply to: Tirana – much to see/do?

In Tirana now on a BAH at the Marriott which overlooks the Air Albania stadium; another BAH option is The Rogner which is pretty much next door. It’s a 15 minute walk to Skanderbeg Square and BunkArt2 which is this morning’s outing. Excellent food and service in the Marriott; the lounge is very pleasant with the longest “happy hour” I’ve ever encountered 17:30 to 21:30, but fairly limited food options. Rooms are on the small side.

Yesterday we had a full day out with a private guide to Berat, via Durres and a splendid wine tasting at Cobo winery (who knew that Albanian wines were so good). Cobo is probably the best known winery but there are many others. It was a lovely day out and the weather was kind to us.

Tomorrow we’re off to Lake Ohrid in North Macedonia. Private day tours run at about £200 plus tip. A 5 day holiday in Tirana would be too long if you didn’t include a couple of day trips in my opinion.

As a passenger I didn’t think the driving was actually that bad – and we’ve driven in Milan!

Cash is definitely king here, second the outrage of £5 withdrawal fee at ATMs

I went to Albania and Macedonia about 10 years ago. Tirana isn’t pretty, but you can while away a day or so, try the Blloku area for cafes and bars. The highlights lay elsewhere in Albania (Berat, Girojkastra, Saranda) I agree re Cobo winery! Did you try the walnut rakia? Delicious! Lake Ohrid is wonderful, I was on the Macedonian side (Bitola IIRC) and had a lovely time.
