Wednesday night I started to furiosly type an expletive-filled rant about BA’s IT systems but then changed my mind and went to bed angry instead. The reason? By the time I got to the payment screen for the tickets at 01:02:00, they were gone. Hey it’s a race so I wouldn’t have been so upset if I had been given a fighting chance but – first the website stopped working at exactly 01:00:00, then the search came back with an error, then it threw me back to the main screen mid-booking because I was apparently usng multiple tabs (which I wasn’t).

Well, 24h later it all went much smoother, I was done in 50 seconds and crossing my fingers while the final screen was loading, so happy to report that return flights are secured and we can start planning. Just need half the avios refunded which we’ll sort later today. Thanks everyone for your help. I’m just hoping now that 15 full days will be enough for Japan 🙂

Just to add to this, for our Valencia-Madrid train trip, we checked Trainline for availability but booked on Tripdotcom as it was marginally cheaper. The train itself was operated by Iryo, so definitely check for alternatives to Renfe.

Asked numerous times on this thread, but briefly most BA agents stipulate this, you might be lucky and get one who doesn’t, but don’t count on it.

Thanks very much, what if I’m booking the return online (separate bookings), do I have free choice then?

Sorry if this has been asked before, when booking the return leg separately, am I able to use a different combination of avios + taxes or must it match what was used for the outbound flight. Outbound is IB inbound with BA if it matters.

If you keep checking in the IB app every couple of weeks, they will appear!

That’s a great shout, thanks, looks like the seat maps are published till about mid-April 2025 so will check in a few weeks. The seats themselves are a lot cheaper than expected too vs BA…

Thanks @JDB for your help yesterday, inputting the BAEC numbers on the API solved the problem and now I can see the flight in the BA app. I’d like to select and pay for the seats in advance but am unable too (neither through BA or Iberia). Is this to do with the flight being a year away in May-25, or is calling and booking over the phone our only option?

@xefo – Iberia flights will appear in your BAEC account without any time lag, even if no BA sectors so it’s very likely your BAEC number has been removed from the booking. If you put it back in via the airline site you booked or another OW one, you should be able to see the flights in the BA app.

Thanks, added the BAEC numbers, we’ll see if that does the trick!

Any idea how long it usually takes for reward flights on Iberia to show up in the BA account? Trying to add it manually comes up with this error: “Sorry, we are unable to add bookings that do not contain any British Airways flights to your account”

@davefl Yup, Olimpija is the one we visited (more times than I’d care to admit). I still dream of that burek sometimes…

    @ExpatInBerlin
hope you like the IC, don’t know if you have status with them, I was diamond at the time and got a double upgrade with lounge access thrown in. The Spa is worth visiting too, the massages were very reasonably priced.

Late to the party but will chip in in anyway – We spent a couple of days in Ljubljana last year and absolutely loved it. Stayed at the IC, everything from the friendliness of staff to the facilities (great pool/sauna) and quality of food and drinks at the restaurant/bar were top notch.

Right across the street from the IC is a hole in the wall type place selling bureks – traditional meat/cheese pastries, definitely worth trying. For more traditional food head to Baščaršija. Great little town but but not much to do in Ljulbljana itself so spending 2 nights should be enough.

Reviving this thread – Have an upgrade voucher in my account but when I checked in online this morning – there was no option to use it on either of the two screens. Does this mean there was no availability (believe the level above would have been a suite)?

Hi all, following itineraries closely as looking at around 3 weeks in May 2025.
I will read every post closely but so far the plan is looking like 5 days in Tokyo and then Osaka for 5 days to use that as a base. The infant will be almost 2 years.

Thinking of possibly flying on Qatar and flying into Tokyo Narita as I’m not sure I like the look of BA flight times and I’ll probably fail at snapping those tickets up as sounds like Japan will be very popular that time of the year.

May after Golden week (after 5th May) is not that popular. You should be fine.

Do hotels tend to be cheaper after Golden week as well (compared to GW and Sakura season?)

MAD-NRT on Iberia and HND-LHR on BA return, does this work in theory using a 2-4-1?

in reply to: Using Avios points to Tokyo

@Aston100 There is somewhere on the site. It’s not entirely the same because Iberia releases awards 360 days in advance and BA 355 days. And yes, could be it’s sold out.

You can book MAD-NRT//NRT-LHR via MAD on 241 voucher, but it will require a phone call.

Is this possible as the NRT-MAD flight lands at 20:30 and don’t think there’s any BA or IB flights that depart that late.

EDIT: Nvm I can see that this has been answered and an overnight stay in Madrid would be required. Follow-up question, is it possible to book MAD-NRT and HND-LHR on a 2-4-1? Obviously separate bookings with avios refunded.

You’re effectively paying 1.1p to purchase these avios, given that you can “boost” your normal avios spend at 0.92p, seems like a pretty poor deal, unless you’re a bit short on avios and really short on time.

Visited Hawksmoor Air Street last weekend, pretty disappointing overall. They’d run out of prime rib and the second choice Porterhouse was so tough and chewy we had to send it back. The ribeyes were average at best. Says a lot when the item we enjoyed most that evening was the vegan mushroom/cashew starter. In terms of quality/price ratio, Blacklock reigns undefeated.

Trying to downgrade my BAPP to free blue card but can’t do this on live chat now?

    Yes need to call.

    xefo 51 posts

Second retention offer in two months, OH called with a view to downgrade, 10k points offered for £3k spent in the next 90 days. Accepted as we were undecided about downgrading anyway, we’ll reassess in a few months.

@davedent, did you do this run in the sweet spot of the TP collection year (as in, the part of the year that gets you almost 2 years of status)?

For the uninitiated, what is that sweet spot?

10 months into my first year, renewal in November, accepted 35k MR points via phone (Brighton call centre).

Called BA today to get the bookings linked and avios refunded. Was bracing myself for the worst but 5 minutes later it was all done and avios back in the account, super helpful agent. Tokyo, here we come!
