Get a bargain in the Business Traveller charity Christmas auction

Business Traveller magazine is once again running its annual online charity auction. This year the cause is The Royal Hospital for Neuro-Disability in Putney.

BT has an unbeatable contact list in the industry and they have put together a huge list of items, from flights to cuddy toys.  See here for details.

It is obviously for a great cause, so do take a quick look and see if anything takes your fancy. The deadline for bids is tomorrow, December 31st.

It is limited to Business Traveller UK readers so the competition for lots is not huge, although don’t expect many giveaways.  I know at least one Head for Points reader successfully got a bargain in previous years.

As usual, Jumeirah has thrown in some very generous packages and, at the moment, those lots are looking very undervalued – possibly because not a lot of people are aware of how good their properties are.

Five nights in a Club Premier Suite at Emirates Towers in Dubai, for example, is just £869 at the time of writing – you would be paying around £2,700 for the same room in February.

There are some other Dubai hotels on the list which also seem underpriced.

There is one other lot which looks like it is slipping under the radar.  Singapore Airlines has donated five 12-month passes for two people for its Heathrow Terminal 2 business class lounge.  These are currently selling for a pitiful £26 to £36 each.

If you fly out of Terminal 2 on a regular basis then buying one of these passes would be an outstanding deal.  You can use the lounge irrespective of which carrier you are flying on (according to the terms and conditions) – all you need to remember is that the lounge is in the B satellite so you would need to walk there and back if flying from the main building.

I don’t know if this is new or not but on subject of Business Traveller I note they were adverising that a magazine subscription now includes online subscription to New York Times. Maybe a good opportunity for the hoards who can no longer stomach the ‘quality’ ‘British’ press!

Think it’s only a 12 week trial, James.

NYT’s latest 8 week free trial offer for everyone ended yesterday but will be back soon. Economics of their endless no strings cancellation promotions baffle me.

Miss the IHT brand, seemed more glam reading it in lounges (even if only on a Breathless UK domestic).

Incidentally google around and Spotify, Deezer and Napster all have 3 months no strings premium subscriptions for 99p deals ending tomorrow. Download your chosen music to your phone and make travelling/commuting so much easier.

Presumably this burst of promotional activity is a response to a lot of apple music free trials expiring around now (and people getting new phones for Christmas).

Any idea if you will be able to earn / use Delta or Flying Blue points on Virgin flights soon seeing as you can earn / use Virgin points on Delta flights?

Don’t see any bargains in this auction, several items going for more than face value. £126 for two nights in a travelodge???
LTD auction a bit better but a bit more esoteric.

In fairness, £126 for two nights in a TL in somewhere like York (on a weekend… especially a race weekend) is a cheap proposition!

Rob, good news on the Virgin extending the GLA-MCO to Nov.

Do you have a direct link for this News release?

  • Chris says:

    Off topic so apologies.

My mum has about 20k in Marriott points that are expiring on January 3rd does anyone know if buying points will extend the validity or does it need to be a redemption or stay to keep them alive?

I’ve only every stayed once with Marriott in the last two years so I’m not up on their programme TBH.

If anyone can answer it is much appreciated.

Come on! Some of us actually were leading on the Singapore passes this morning …!

Off topic: my 2000 Groupon Avios have posted! Hooray!

No sign of the 304 I get from purchasing via Iberia’s Store – I assume they’ll come later.

    • Andrew H says:

Pulled BAEC via Avios.com. Wasn’t expecting them until the New Year so that’s a nice bonus!
