Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

ENDS MONDAY: Win Apple AirPods with HfP and Qatar Duty Free

Links on Head for Points may support the site by paying a commission.  See here for all partner links.

Until midnight on Monday 6th March, we are running an exclusive Head for Points competition in association with Qatar Duty Free.

We have two pairs of Apple AirPods (3rd generation) to give away.

This is to promote the fact that you can now use Avios to pay for (virtually) anything at Qatar Duty Free in Doha’s Hamad International Airport. Indeed, I bought these AirPods at Qatar Duty Free when I was in Doha last month, paying with Avios generously donated by Qatar Airways Privilege Club.

Win AirPods 3rd generation

The 3rd generation AirPods can provide up to six hours of wireless listening from a single charge. You can use AirPods even if you don’t have an Apple device via a Bluetooth connection.

The recommended retail price of these 3rd generation AirPods is £179.

How can you use Avios at Qatar Duty Free?

Full details are on this page of the Qatar Airways website.

You need to have Avios sitting in a Qatar Airways Privilege Club account. Even if your British Airways account is linked to a Qatar Airways Privilege Club account, you still need to physically transfer them across if you wish to spend them in the airport.

This HfP article shows how to link your Qatar Airways Privilege Club and British Airways accounts.

Avios from your flight now appear at check in

If you are flying on Qatar Airways on a cash ticket, you will now receive the Avios from your flight BEFORE departure. This allows you to spend them in Doha during your transit. Clever!

To receive your Avios at check in before your flight, you need to be crediting your Qatar Airways flight to a Qatar Airways Privilege Club Avios account. If your flight is being credited to a British Airways account, the points will turn up a few days later as they do now and so won’t be available to spend immediately.

Earn Qatar Avios before departure

The process for spending your Avios is simple.

When you come to pay for your items, you simply scan your boarding pass. The cashier will instantly see how many Avios you have in your Qatar Airways Privilege Club account, and you can choose to use some or all of them towards your purchase.

(If you are crediting your flight to British Airways Executive Club or another programme and your Qatar Airways Privilege Club number is not on your boarding pass, you can show your Qatar Airways Privilege Club membership card on your phone instead.)

You have to click an on-screen confirmation:

Spend Avios in Qatar Duty Free

…. and you’re done. As you can see, I spent 63,663 Avios which covered 100% of the cost of the two pairs of AirPods we are giving away today.

This HfP article explains the process of spending Avios at Qatar Duty Free in more detail.

You earn Avios on Qatar Duty Free purchases too

You earn Avios in the same way – scan your boarding pass to bring up your Qatar Airways Privilege Club account number, or have your membership card scanned.

If you part-pay with Avios, you earn points based on the cash element you pay. If you pay with 100% Avios, as I did, you don’t earn any Avios back.

Win AirPods with Qatar Duty Free

How can I win AirPods?

It’s very simple. All you need to do is complete the form below by midnight on Monday 6th March. (Mobile readers should click the button below.) We will draw the two winners later in the week.

The full rules are in the entry widget, but here are the key ones:

  • you must be a UK resident and physically present in the UK to enter
  • only one entry per household
  • you must be aged 18+ to enter
  • prizes can only be despatched to a UK address
  • your entry data will not be shared with anyone outside HfP and we will delete it after the competition is over

The competition is organised by Head for Points with the support of Qatar Airways Privilege Club and Qatar Duty Free. Apple Inc. and Avios Group are not associated with the competition in any way.

Good luck!

I’m not entering because I’ve some great beats ear buds and I also don’t need to ebay competition prizes, good luck to the genuine entrants.

    • Gordon says:

Everyone Is a Genuine entrant as the competition is aimed at “Hfp” readers?.

      • Richie says:

You’re an ebay punter Gordon, not someone who would genuinely enjoy the prize.

        • Gordon says:

My point was that everyone is a genuine entrant irrespective of if you appreciate the prize or not….

          • BA Flyer IHG Stayer says:

If you don’t appreciate the prize then don’t enter.

If you entering just to resell then IMHO your not making a genuine entry.

          • Gordon says:

BA Flyer IHG Stayer, As you say that’s just your opinion, I don’t see anything in the T&C’s about what you do with the prize if won, I used eBay a term of phrase they would go to my granddaughter, Also I doubt the majority of readers would not really need them as in the last hfp pole Rob carried out most of the subscribers earned in excess of 75k pa, So they could easily afford a better listening device….

    • Harry T says:

Beats and great in the same sentence, is this a cry for help…

      • Richie says:

No, they’re great because they suit my needs at the moment, I’ve fingers crossed that my work phone ceases to be Android very soon.

      • dougzz99 says:

Beats are the perfect example of style over substance. Over priced before Apple bought them, proof of just how valuable branding can be.

  • Marc says:

For some reason it is asking me to confirm that my iCloud email address is valid by logging in via social media? This seems a little unnecessary

    • David says:

You must have entered a previous competition using the Gleam tool, using the same email address and either been signed into a social media account, or taken an action in a social media account to get more entries (e.g. follow us on instagram to get another 3 entries, etc).
Once you have done that once with Gleam they then want you to use a social media account login in the future.
You should be able to follow the options to recover your gleam account via email, which will let you enter without the social media bit, but the next time it sees one this will repeat.

  • Mark says:

Has anyone else tried entering and it says it needs to “verify you are a genuine person” with a social media login?

Sorry, no, ask me to pick bridges in images (captcha) if you need to verify me, but you’re not getting my social details… Why on earth (or in the sky) is this a requirement?

    • Hardpack says:

I’m not on any social media and was able to enter just with name and email

      • Gordon says:

        +1

        • Mark says:

Ok thanks, seems it’s not for everyone then, but does unfortunately mean I can’t (won’t) enter – good luck to you!

    • David says:

  • Jim says:

I’m flying QR out of London tomorrow, does the new Frequent Flyer lounge have showers?

    • Chabuddy Geezy says:

Yes, I think one shower each for male and female.

  • Peter K says:

Thanks for the competition Rob & team.

    • sloth says:

      +1

Tbh I don’t know why Rob bothers with these competitions, the associated aggro and entitled whinging about the prizes and whether you can enter from abroad or not..he should have just donated the equivalent to charity and be done with it

      • Nick says:

        +1

Crazy, isn’t it! Probably something to do with the sense of entitlement we have in society today! I’m in my sixties and it never fails to amaze me how some people today can moan and criticise about something they could win for nought! As you say. I don’t know why Rob bothers!

      • VerdantBacon says:

It wouldn’t be HfP without the active commentators and posters whinging about something. People here have a fantastic ability to complain about anything.

I don’t usually read the comments or forums anymore as it’s devolved to absolute drivel, but I just knew HfP giving something away for free would have a very entertaining comments section

        • Mike Hunt says:

Perhaps give two entities to holders of Plat Amex and three entities to Centurion card holders would help

      • BA Flyer IHG Stayer says:

3,700 + entries at the time I type this shows a grid level of interest.

Even if Rob donated them they’d still be whinging about where he donated them to!

I’m sure he tunes out most of the moaning!

        • Nick says:

Indeed! As with many great websites, as HfP clearly is, which was started by someone with a vision, they often start off with a small audience, in a very pleasant way, with the vast majority of posters contributing to the overall site, and, usually, posting helpful comments & advice for others.

Unfortunately, as is also often the case, many of the ‘later’ contributors, either have no comprehension, whatsoever, on their own little planet, of what running a small business entails, and/or just like to moan & whinge, because it’s probably, just part of the ethos of some people in society today!

IMHO, just continue as you do Rob, as this is a great, growing site, and just ignore the pointless idiots!

          • JDB says:

@Nick – so right! The sense of entitlement, constant expectations of something for nothing, complete lack of understanding about business and people wanting someone to blame/compensate them if anything goes wrong for when they aren’t remotely ‘victims’ and have contributed to the problem is quite extraordinary. One can only assume they aren’t in very responsible jobs.

It’s been very instructive being in Argentina where people long ago gave up relying on the state or anyone else to help them / look after them. As a result people are just so much more resilient, entrepreneurial and resourceful and have a good lifestyle even if the country is completely bankrupt.

  • Jonathan says:

I’ve got some AirPods Pro, they unfortunately fall out of my ears easily, and I walk areas where I won’t be able to retrieve them if they fall out at the worst time

So for that reason I won’t be bothering entering, plus I don’t need any more headphones

It’s a shame Apple don’t cater much to people who need over-ear headphones, apart from one option that’s incredibly overpriced, even someone at Apple support team said ‘even if I was a millionaire I’d think twice about buying those (AirPods Pro Max)’

    • Save East Coast Rewards says:

AirPods Pro come with different sized pieces to fit different ear sizes.

    • tony says:

Easy. Just buy yourself an earbud lanyard strap which sells on Amazon for about £6 and has the brilliant ability to make your £200 Airpods look just like the free wired earbuds that you get with a phone for free when you buy it. (Honestly, I’m not making this up….)

    • dougzz99 says:

Possibly because if you’re serious about sound, noise cancelling or other aspects of over ear headphones you’re looking at Bose, Sony and Sennheiser not products based around a cult like branding operation.

      • TGLoyalty says:

Seriously the Pro 2 are actually brilliant have and do own many different high end earbuds and headphones

If they’re falling out of your ears you have the wrong bud attachments on.

        • dougzz99 says:

That’s the thing about a cult, when they’ve got you on the inside you don’t even know.

    • S says:

Try Comply foam tips for the Pros from Amazon, much more secure.

I was able to get my Max for about £280 and for me they’re worth that all day long. At RRP I’m not so convinced

  • tw33ty says:

I bought a pair of nothing ear 1 wireless headphones, found them to be great for the price

  • Azza says:

Well these comments are a barrel of laughs.
