Heathrow trialling pre-booked security slots

Heathrow has launched a six month trial which will allow passengers to pre-book a slot to go through airport security.

It’s not clear if this is necessary, especially as Heathrow itself says that the majority of passengers cleared security in under five minutes during the summer peak this year. There seems to be a view that it has value for infrequent flyers.

The trial is initially restricted to passengers flying with American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Emirates and Virgin Atlantic from Terminal 3.

Heathrow Airport security

There will be a dedicated security lane which can only be used by passengers who have pre-booked a slot. The service is free.

You have a 15 minute window either side of your slot to enter the queue. One issue is that the cut-off times seem excessive – you must clear security at least 90 minutes before a long-haul flight and (when short haul flights are eventually added) at least 60 minutes before departure.

If you want to try it out and have an upcoming flight on a qualifying airline, you can book a slot here.

The hotel looks like it will be next to the old hacienda, and around the corner form the best pub in Manchester: Peveril of the Peak

    • AL says:

That’s a bold claim – the Pev or the Britons as the best?! Tough call.

    • Rick says:

No, it’s between St Peter’s Square and Spinningfields, behind Albert Schloss. The historic pub Sir Ralph Abercromby is being retained following a petition.

  • KG says:

Amsterdam Schiphol has a slot booking system for security and it worked like a breeze the few times I used it. 1 out of the 4 lines was reserved for people who had booked and you could save 10-15min easily when it was crowded. The only problem is the last booking slot is 90 min before departure for a non-schengen flight (but you have a 15min cushion) so I can’t turn up an hour before the flight like I used to. Though you can select a later flight I geuss as they dont really check your boarding pass with the booking slot details.

Berlin has the exact same scheme (BER Runway) which works wonders if you’re travelling HBO. Granted, this is mostly because the rest of BER security is slow and plenty of ppl act as if they have never been to an airport before.

Admittedly, I’ve never had issues going through Heathrow security (10 min or less every time) but it could be a life-saver if there are long lines and one has booked a slot (costs nothing).

I used fast track security at Madrid last week, included for Biz passengers (although they dont explain it at check in), there was no queue and no other passengers.

    • Londonsteve says:

It’s remarkable, isn’t it. For an airport the size of Barajas you’d expect a constant flow of passengers using fast track. Nearly every time I’ve passed through the staff are twiddling their thumbs and almost surprised to see me. A lack of pax flying business + a general lack of status holders? Vast surplus capacity at MAD leading to few queues?

    • Lyn says:

You can’t take a guest through Fast Track in Madrid like you can at Heathrow, so that cuts down the number of people a little.

      • Londonsteve says:

I’ve been through Madrid fast track with a +1 travelling on my booking and we received identical benefits deriving from my status.

Can just imagine the scene of Love Island clones and footballers at a W Manchester 😀

  • Ben says:

Random question: if I have a single BAPP 2-4-1 voucher, can I use it to book for 4 people (2 on 2-4-1 and 2 on standard Avios)? If so, does it open up the additional availability to all on the booking?

    • Rob says:

No. You can do this on one booking but it won’t show the extra seats for anyone.

      • NorthernLass says:

It’s even more complicated than this; if there are extra availability seats, you can only have 2 people on the booking, even if there are also standard seats available.

  • Matarredonda says:

Gatwick and NATS should be ashamed of themselves.

    • Peter K says:

Not quite sure what Gatwick can do about it? NATS is an independent company.

      • JDB says:

NATS isn’t exactly ‘independent’ as the government has 49% and a golden share. What might irk LGW is that HAL has a stake in NATS together with the airline consortium and staff.

  • Tariq says:

Actually walked past the site on Tuesday and the building in progress seemed around 10 stories up so far. Quite a big block plot so I imagine multiple buildings will be going in. Seems a bit of an odd location though down a bunch of side streets, although close to the main attractions.
