Mongolian Airlines looking to join oneworld

The CEO of MIAT Mongolian Airlines, Munkhtamir Batbayar, told CNN in an interview this week that the airline is keen to join oneworld connect.

oneworld connect is a halfway house to full oneworld membership, with Fiji Airways the only current oneworld connect member.

MIAT Mongolian Airlines may join oneworld alliance

Airlines which join oneworld connect:

  • offer a restricted range of benefits to oneworld elite members (such as British Airways Executive Club elites)
  • offer a more extensive range of oneworld member benefits to their ‘sponsor airlines’, ie one or two carriers which work with the airline to help it through the oneworld process

British Airways is a ‘sponsor airline’ for Fiji Airways, allowing elite members of British Airways Executive Club to enjoy benefits whilst flying on the carrier. You can also redeem Avios for Fiji Airways flights at ba.com.

It seems more likely that Cathay Pacific and Japan Airlines would sponsor MIAT into oneworld, based on its existing relationships.

MIAT is a small airline with just eight aircraft in its fleet, including one Boeing 787. It serves 20 destinations in eight countries.

I wonder what the Hotel Cafe Royal would make of my £10 Whitechapel Road market suitcase?

    • Stu_N says:

I’d expect it would be treated with the same care and respect as any other luggage.

You should expect staff at high-end hotels to be super professional and treat everyone and their possessions the same, regardless of whether check in with brand new matching Louis Vuitton luggage, world-worn Tumi, a market stall special or a knackered North Face duffell bag.

A few years ago I turned up at the Four Seasons in Berlin in a Ford Mondeo estate which had seen better days before we bought it for EUR850.
The valet parking was professional with a straight face.
I smile at what the staff may have tittered between themselves 🙂

MIAT in OW would be amazing!

I second this! I highly recommend a visit to the Gobi desert to anyone considering a visit. It’s absolutely stunning.

Oneworld Connect is pretty useless unless you have status with one of their sponsor airlines.

So if BA (or your oneworld scheme of choice) is not one of the sponsor airlines you only get business class check-in and priority boarding. You do not get the good stuff like tier points, Avios and lounge access. Only members of the sponsor airlines get that

The Lutetia is a brilliant hotel, had a great stay there several years ago – but it’s now sadly unaffordable p, post it’s refurbishment.. lottery winner prices!

Was at Sushsamba yesterday. Toilets are a poor experience. Toilet roll stacked on the shelf behind the toilet. When you wash your hands the water pressure makes the water blast out the sink soaking you and the counter. Then there was nothing to dry hands with, had to go get toilet roll. Spoke to the staff twice, but it’s not their job to restock the hand towels. Only housekeeping can do that. So for a whole afternoon… no hand towels.
We paid £320 for lunch for 2. So not what I expect from.a fairly expensive restaurant.
Upstairs 360 viewing only available if you ask to be escorted. The igloos are not yet available for booking.
Bar on floor 11 was nice but they seated us away round the back when there were plenty window seats. Asked to be moved.
It is a lovely view, but they missed a trick in the restaurant by not having glass on the balcony, so you can only see the view if you stand.

When the chain’s locations are (London & Edinburgh) Las Vegas, Dubai, Doha & Bahrain you are sort of on notice to expect an unremarkable to not great experience at an elevated price. I’m sure it’s very popular on social media.

      • Erico1875 says:

Pretty much what I’ve experienced via Amex Platinum dining credit
If it wasn’t “free” I doubt any of the Edinburgh locations were worth half of what they charged.
Emperor’s new clothes fable springs to mind

Any upgrades on possible Azul (brazil) or rwandair joining oneworld?

On the topic of Hotel Cafe Royale.
I had dinner in the Alex Dilling restaurant the other day. It has 2 Michelin star, and my suspicion is that there may be a third one coming soon.
Superb dining experience, at a reasonable price when you consider the quality and the setting.
    Highly recommend it.
Note that the restaurant is independently managed from the hotel.

    • JDB says:

I don’t think the price is remotely reasonably compared to the cost of eating in restaurants of the same calibre in other countries (including those that don’t have the Michelin to help push up the price) and what these top flight restaurants in the UK previously used to cost in relative terms.

      • Peter K says:

Those restaurants in other countries cost a lot more when you factor in the flight price though 😉

  • LittleNick says:

Would Oneworld Connect be a good halfway house for Aer Lingus? Just offering benefits to BA and Iberia members perhaps? Given how long Fiji has been in oneworld Connect IAG would have done that by now if they thought it would be worth it I suppose?

Am so into the luggage cleaning! Maybe whilst waiting for the valet to bring my free Wraith-for-a-day up from the garage. Fabulous!!!!!!!
