Bristol Airport has taken the first step to launching long haul flights to the US and Middle East with the launch of a public consultation on its expansion plans.
The key is a modest (150m) runway extension which will give the airport the ability to handle selected long haul aircraft.
The plans also include a larger terminal building (up from 50,000 sq m to 130,000 sq m), another airport hotel and improvements to the A38.

Access is generally seen as the biggest barrier to the success of the airport, with many in the region finding it easier to drive to Heathrow. Even under the new plans, only 20% of passengers would use public transport to reach the airport.
The planned growth in passenger numbers is relatively modest, going from the expected 12 million in 2027/8 to 15 million per year with an increase in aircraft movements from 85,000 to 100,000.
The consultation runs to the end of January after which a planning application will be submitted.
