Did you know Thameslink always declassifies the rear First Class carriage?

As anyone who read my University Arms hotel review will know, I was in Cambridge recently to ferry my son to a summer school.

Whilst there are a number of rail options to Cambridge, we ended up on a Thameslink service from London St Pancras.

This reminded me of a little known bit of London rail trivia. The rear First Class carriage on Thameslink is always declassified.

By ‘declassified’, Thameslink means ‘is treated as Standard Class’.

This means that you can sit in the REAR First Class carriage on any Thameslink train with a Standard Class ticket.

It is confirmed on the Thameslink website here – click and expand the question ‘Is First Class available on all Thameslink trains?’.

You will NOT see any signage on the train to confirm this although it is often mentioned on the scrolling digital display inside.

As with all of the London suburban rail networks, First Class isn’t substantially better than Standard Class. You do, however, get a table and more spacious seating. I believe these are also the only carriages with power sockets. First Class is also quieter, even in the declassified coach, because most people don’t know that anyone can sit there.

(We had an American couple sat opposite us who, based on their conversation, had clearly paid for a First Class ticket. We hadn’t.)

The declassfied coach is identical to the ‘real’ First Class carriage at the front of the train. This is obvious when you think about it, because on the return journey the carriage that was at the front is now at the back!

ALL First Class is declassified on some routes

This information is REALLY hidden away, but some Thameslink routes declassify all of their First Class seats, at the front and the back of the train, because First Class tickets are not sold for those services.

There is a 2019 map showing these routes in this X post.

Assuming nothing has changed, both First Class carriages are declassified if your train terminates at:

  • Luton
  • St Albans
  • West Hampstead Thameslink
  • Kentish Town
  • Wimbledon
  • Sutton
  • Orpington
  • Rainham
  • Sevenoaks

This is one of these facts which is only useful when few people know about it. When the class 700s were introduced and hardly anyone knew about this you could head to the back of an otherwise full train and be almost be guaranteed a seat.

  • Lumma says:

You can still buy a 1st Class season ticket from the likes of St Albans too. Over £3k a year for absolutely nothing

    • John says:

The Bedford services have 1st class. As a commuter to central London those are the trains you’d be using rather than the stoppers which are std only.

      • BlairWaldorfSalad says:

Exactly this! Even the Bedford service that stops at West Hampstead receives my ire. I only want to board the services that are St Pancras, St Albans then onwards.

  • Amy C says:

Well that’s blown my little secret 😩

    • Speedbird676 says:

      Exactly my thought!

    • Chas says:

It’s hardly a secret now, as most of the time from my Hertfordshire local station the rear carriage is often standing room only. Very different from when these trains were introduced when there were only a few people in the carriage.

    • SammyJ says:

Exactly what I thought… nooooo, don’t tell everyone!!

    • Thomas Atkins says:

      Same 🤦🏼

  • Terry Butcher says:

And the seats are nearly as uncomfortable as in standard clasd owing to their sculptured sheep.

    • Oviplokos1 says:

      I don’t think it’s sculptured sheep’s fault, tbh.

    • BlairWaldorfSalad says:

Truly a back spasm inducing seat. I once took it to/from LGW on a bank holiday weekend and brought a little foam bead cushion to wedge between me and the seat. I got the idea from a commuting businessman I saw doing so

  • Neil says:

The information screens at City Thameslink listing the stops for the trains usually say that First Class is not available and that you can sit in it on a standard ticket.

  • Kev says:

The overhead display does rotate various helpful bits of information including confirmation that standard ticket holders can use the rear 1st class carriage.

    • Crackers says:

Came here to say this! Screens on the platform and on the train itself confirm this.

  • Paul says:

As a retired train driver for Thameslink I can confirm that all of the above is correct.
The design specification for the Thameslink fleet was set by the Department for Transport hence the ironing board seats and a first class at both ends of the train, the rear of which is ALWAYS declassified.
Another little known fact is that out of a fleet of 150 trains, only half have had wi-fi switched on despite the entire fleet having it fitted at the build stage. Some of these trains are now 10 years old! Another DfT decision.

  • lcylocal says:

Even more little known is that first class is always declassified on all Southern ‘metro’ services, these are the stopping commuter services in south London, not the fast services to Brighton, Gatwick etc.

    • LD27 says:

Yes. But not many travellers realise. I’m currently sitting on the Dorking to Victoria train in First Class with air con and toilets. So much better than the old train without either which was chugging off to Waterloo when I arrived at Dorking earlier!

So if you’re ever venturing south to Box Hill or Denbies winery, take the train from Victoria.
