How many British Airways Avios points do you need to fly to a particular city?

It is surprisingly tricky to find out how many Avios are required for a particular route.  The ‘Avios Spending Calculator’, which had been broken for a long time, has now permanently disappeared from ba.com.

This table should simplify the process.  It lists British Airways destinations alphabetically with pricing to / from London.  Prices are one-way.

How many Avios do I need to fly to ....?

How does the Avios pricing table work?

Prices are shown separately for off peak and peak dates.  These are shown in ba.com during the booking process.

The 2025/26 Avios peak dates calendar is on HfP here.

There are ‘fewer Avios, more cash’ options too – and they may be better value

British Airways, historically, has added a ‘taxes and charges’ sum to Avios redemption pricing. This has changed.

You now pay a fixed figure to contribute towards taxes and charges, as low as 50p each way on short haul economy flights and £12.50 each way on short haul business class flights.

Other pricing options are available, requiring fewer Avios but more cash. You can see these on the final page of the ba.com booking process.

For short haul, you will generally get better value by NOT choosing the 50p / £12.50 cheapest option. The best option is usually somewhere in the middle. For long haul, the ‘most Avios, least tax’ option as shown below is likely to be best value.

What’s the easiest way of knowing which Avios and cash combination is best?

I use ‘the 1p system’ which I outline here.

Put simply, assume that an Avios point is worth 1p. For each of the 5-6 Avios and cash combinations shown, convert the Avios into cash at 1p per point and see which option is cheapest in total. This will help you decide which option is best for you.

For example, 10,000 Avios + £200 is a poorer choice than 20,000 Avios + £50 if you use my ‘1p per Avios’ valuation. Of course if you only have 10,000 Avios then you’ll be choosing that option anyway – you may also want to choose that option to conserve Avios for future trips.

What about First Class redemptions?

Whilst it’s possible to redeem Avios for First Class tickets, British Airways treats them slightly differently and the pricing structure is not the same as for other classes.

To keep this chart simple(ish), we have written a separate article on how to redeem Avios points for First Class flights on British Airways which is here.

The British Airways Avios flight redemption pricing chart

Let me say again: there are other pricing options available for each route which require fewer Avios but more cash. Some of these options may even be better value, especially on short haul routes, if you are not using a British Airways American Express 2-4-1 companion voucher.

To find out how many Avios you need to fly in British Airways First Class, read this article.

Nice, but any chance of making this available as a spreadsheet?

    • Rob says:

You can make it one with a copy and paste!

We don’t have it – the previous version we do, but all the additions and changes for 2025 were done manually into WordPress.

  • The Original David says:

I’d be interested to know on what proportion of short-haul redemptions people choose the ‘max avios min cash’ numbers in this table. Obviously it’s terrible value, but I suspect a lot of people don’t stop to think about it…

    • BlairWaldorfSalad says:

There was some article about Avios use in Ireland earned from Aer Lingus and how the vast majority were redeemed at checkout for paltry amounts off a cash flight. Thank god for these people and long may they continue to behave irrationally

    • BA Flyer IHG Stayer says:

      Is it terrible value though?

The max avios min cash option gives the impression you are getting a (close to) free flight (especially short haul economy) which is important to many people.

As Rob mentioned the other options allow people to spend relatively small amounts of avios to either save them for something else or use up a small number.

      • NorthernLass says:

I think BWS means the option to reduce a cash fare by, say, £400 in exchange for 100,000 avios. Which is what my in-laws did!

  • TimM says:

A decent bit of research, thank you.

I wonder 1) if BA will ever change the configuration of their short haul business class seating to something more comfortable, rather than just leave the middle seat vacant – they don’t even have the middle seat tables anymore and 2) if they will ever re-instate direct flights from anywhere in the UK other than London?

    • JDB says:

The answer to 1) must be no, it’s totally unaffordable and 2) most unlikely – why would they and how could they profitably do so?

      • Lumma says:

        1) They could do something like what Avianca offer on their narrow body planes. The first three rows are wider seats with a fixed table but still “economy sized”. When I flew on them on a domestic flight in Colombia they weren’t even sold as business or premium just as extra space seats.

        • JDB says:

Why on earth would BA trade away the operational and financial flexibility of its current system which is hardly a very radical one amongst European airlines? The ability to flex the Club cabin size and easily swap aircraft as required is hugely valuable, simple and ultimately a good overall solution for passengers.

A number of SAm airlines do almost the opposite, using internationally configured aircraft (with business seats) on domestic routes but sold as premium economy. Those airlines are either aren’t or are not required to be particularly profitable even with high fares.

BA and other legacy flag carriers have to compete daily against very strong LCCs who don’t carry the historic baggage/costs that the former cannot shed.

          • Jake says:

One question on this though @jdb:

Every single BA short haul flight probably has 4-8 seats of business class so what flexibility would they lose? Could they not install 2 rows of proper business class (lose one extra row of economy at the back) and then ask business class passengers to pay to upgrade into those seats? The revenue would offset the lost economy seats and act as a value proposition against competitors.

For flights with minimal business class passengers (so the seats are assigned by standard) chances are the economy seats at the back would have been empty anyway.

          • JDB says:

@Jake – you are still adding cost and wholly gratuitous complexity to create what then becomes effectively a three class short haul flight for no material benefit. The economics of flag carrier short haul are terrible enough as it is.

People are already paying a premium to sit in the Club seats as currently configured so appears to be broadly accepted. Why change this position?

    • BlairWaldorfSalad says:

On a typical LHR-NCE flight April to September, the Club Europe cabin extends to the exit row. No way are they giving that up for 3 rows of fixed comfy seats. Nor I expect would passengers want them to. The NCE route is one that is particularly bad for wheelie case + oversized tote + handbag

      • Lumma says:

The Avianca seats are just wider. Legroom remains the same. I don’t think I’ve been on a BA flight with fewer than three rows of business class, so they wouldn’t be losing any flexibility. People would definitely pay extra for a wider seat in my opinion.

    • BA Flyer IHG Stayer says:

I have a tab on my BA spreadsheet with the formulae in so all I need to drop in are the avios + cash options et voila the £ equivalent for each one is calculated.

    • BA Flyer IHG Stayer says:

      1. No they won’t. Just as IB, AY, LH, KL, AF, …. won’t either.

The flexible cabin for short haul model works in Europe. And it would cost a small fortune to fit new seats plus the lost revenue of not being able to adjust the curtain according to demand.

2 – BA City Flyer does exactly that but only at the weekend.

As you know BA operates the hub-spoke model which means there is a lot more route choice for people. They have the figures of where their passengers live and are travelling to. If there was a sustainable business model for it they would jump at it. But there isn’t so they won’t.

      • Richie says:

Ryanair/ easyJet/ Jet2 may have been quicker off the mark than BA to satisfy non London based short haul demand.

        • JDB says:

It’s not really a question of being quicker off the mark – BA was there before those airlines offering these routes, but they aren’t economic on a network carrier cost base. In a tiny country like the UK, setting up a base at say MAN , under 200 miles from your main base would seem like madness.

          • Richie says:

The UK has a population of more than 67 million, not sure if that’s small.
GB Airways, GT, in BA livery had a base at MANchester, BA could’ve acquired GT without set up costs, before allowing easyJet to expand even further.

    • SBIre says:

I think you’ll find the rest of the world will slowly move to match Euro-style. Some of the Asian airlines are starting to move that way for example – even if passengers are not impressed (Thai jumps to mind)

  • Londoner 79 says:

These days I just copy the avios + cash pricing options into chat GPT, tell the system how much I value an Avios at and there you go, the cheapest overall option calculated in seconds.

    • Lumma says:

Is it not just as quick or quicker adding a decimal into the number of avios and adding the two figures together?

    • John says:

You mean you can’t work it out mentally from just looking at the numbers??

      • JDB says:

I’m absolutely no mathematician, but the inability of so many to carry out basic arithmetic these days is really quite scary. It’s also little use putting anything (maths or otherwise) into ChatGPT if you don’t have a sense of the right answer. The assumption that whatever it spews out is correct is at best a little optimistic.

        • kevin86 says:

I asked ChatGPT about the last time a player had scored more than eg 50 runs in a cricket match. It gave me a match which was happening the next day

        • TJones says:

I remember asking ChatGPT to list every country with an “O” in its name. Back came the answer “Argentina, Armenia, Australia, Austria, Azerbaijan…” (it’s all down to the tokenisation used in the models).

        • HampshireHog says:

Sadly people are getting dumber and dumber. Mental arithmetic went some time ago and what was called ‘comprehension’ at school is now seemingly redundant with chatgtp and the like. I suspect folk won’t mind the machines taking over provided Deliveroo and the like continue to bring luke warm mush to their doors whilst they wallow on their sofas watching the box and updating their instagram accounts?

      • HampshireHog says:

        And quicker in the head

    • SBIre says:

You’d be crazy to trust LLMs with anything that has a binary right or wrong answer like calculations, they built to process large volumes of data and spit back the text mathematically most likely response to your query. They cannot add, they cannot count, they struggle to give the same answer twice, and they famously cannot tell you how many Rs are in Strawberry! Some of the reasoning models are getting better but you still need to double check everything they spit out

  • Andrew J says:

I’ve noticed recently that availability in First has completely disappeared, even on JFK which was usually reasonably easy to find availability.

  • Sam S says:

I need around 85k points to cover my planned fights next year (including use of 2 Barclaycard upgrade vouchers). Currently not eligible for any SUBs until late 2026.

What’s the next best route to attain these – Avios Boost? (I know the multiple amounts is based on spend on last 30 days) but anyone know a ball park figure as how much this would cost me?

  • Jimbob says:

Hadn’t realised before, how relatively poor value New York is, in terms of a avios pricing, compared to some other destinations that are twice the distance but only 10k more avios.
