Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

Get a 10%-20% bonus when you transfer Nectar points to Avios – worth it?

Avios has launched a conversion bonus for anyone sitting on a pile of Nectar points.

Let’s take a look at the deal. Full details are on avios.com here.

The standard conversion rate of Nectar points to Avios is 400 : 250. This has remained unchanged despite two devaluations for people converting in the opposite direction.

As a Nectar point is worth 0.5p when spent at Sainsburys, Argos etc, you are giving up £2 of free shopping in return for 250 Avios. In other words, you are buying Avios for 0.8p. This is a decent deal.

Until 30th September, you will receive a 10% or 20% bonus on every transfer INTO Avios.

A one-off transfer will get you a 10% bonus.

An auto-conversion transfer will get you a 20% bonus. Assuming you are moving over your entire Nectar balance, you might as well activate auto-convert and then, if you wish, disable it later.

(For clarity, there is no bonus in the opposite direction. The rate from Avios into Nectar remains at 400:400.)

This looks pretty attractive, although this bonus is slightly lower than previous ones. For every 400 Nectar points you convert, you will receive (with a 20% bonus) 300 Avios.

Put another way, you are giving up £2 of free shopping to earn 300 Avios, so you are ‘paying’ 0.67p per Avios. It’s an excellent return.

If you happen to be sitting on a pile of Nectar points with no real plan for them, you should seriously think about this deal.

What is the small print?

There doesn’t seem to be much, which is good:

  • The offer runs to 30th September
  • Transfers must be in multiples of 400 Nectar points
  • You can make multiple transfers in that period and get the bonus on all of them

It seems that anyone who already auto-converts their Nectar points into Avios will receive the bonus automatically.

I expect the bonus to post in arrears, not with the original transfer. Based on previous bonuses, you could be waiting some time.

The usual caps apply – you can manually transfer a maximum of 80,000 Nectar points into Avios per calendar month. As this offer does not straddle a month end, you are capped at 80,000 Nectar points. Automatic conversions are capped at a lower level – a maximum of 40,000 Nectar points per calendar quarter.

surely everybody on this site should have recently emptied their Nectar accounts by converting them to Nero vouchers ?!

Surely not everyone on this site lives or works near a Nero… I know I don’t. I live in Kent and the nearest one is the best par of an hour’s drive way.

Having taken advantage of the bonus conversion rates last time, I’ve built up a nice stack to convert this time – I didn’t expect another bonus TBH, but I’m not complaining about one!

I am currently sat in a Nero (the BBC one) drinking a free coffee from my now emptied Nectar pot!

Do we know if the bonus applies to Nectar points earned in promotions or just those earned from cash spend?

  • Charles Martel says:

If you reach the auto convert cap of 40,000 Nectar points, are you able to manually transfer another 40,000, or can you use both caps 40k +80k?

Any tips when trying to (re) connect Nectar to Avios (after new card number issued following Nectar points theft)?
I get the message “Oh dear! Something went wrong Sorry but we couldn’t complete your request this time. Come back later and we will try again for you.” everytime.
Worked perfectly in the past – perhaps my old nectar number is still linked?

I made a mistake in the last promotion so hope to help here prevent another mistake.

I had 80k nectar to convert to 50k avios in April during the 25% auto conversion bonus (15% for one off). Turned on auto convert and 40k nectar transferred and 25k arrived immediately, and the bonus 6250 avios arrived a month later. I thought at the next auto conversion the bonus still applies so I didn’t turn it off. That was obviously not the case so I didn’t get a bonus in July when the second auto conversion happened.

TLDR: if you want to convert 40k or less, use auto-convert for the higher bonus. If you want to convert more, just take the lower bonus rate and do the one off convert.

between signing into nectar yahoo and ba over 3 ppls accounts i seem to have lost a large portion of the hair on the top of my head….by pulling it out! I am still not signed in or auto convert on any of them.
