Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

I test how to spend your GHA DISCOVERY Dollars at The Wolseley!

Links on Head for Points may support the site by paying a commission.  See here for all partner links.

As I revealed in my interview with Global Hotel Alliance CEO Chris Hartley in July, GHA has signed a deal with The Wolseley Hospitality Group.

You can now earn and redeem DISCOVERY Dollars, the loyalty currency of Global Hotel Alliance, at any restaurant in The Wolseley family.

In another tough assignment, I headed down to Piccadilly to try it out.

You are probably familiar with The Wolseley on Piccadilly, which is one of London’s best known all-day cafe-restaurants.

The broader group includes The Wolseley City in Monument, The Delaunay in Aldwych, Brasserie Zédel in Soho, Colbert in Chelsea, Fischer’s in Marylebone, Soutine in St John’s Wood, Bellanger in Islington and Manzi’s in Soho. All of these let you earn and redeem DISCOVERY Dollars.

I won’t go into how Global Hotel Alliance works as full details are in my interview with Chris Hartley here. It is a grouping of over 40 hotel brands, including Kempinski, Corinthia, NH and Anantara, which share one loyalty scheme.

It is a revenue based programme with members earning, based on status, 4% to 7% of their pre-tax spend back in DISCOVERY Dollars. These are to be spent on future stays, but now you can also use them for meals at The Wolseley and its sister restaurants.

The flagship Piccadilly site is a classy but friendly venue. Here are a few things we had, starting with dressed Dorset crab:

…. and calf’s liver with bacon, with melted onions and Sauce Robert:

…. and a berry crumble for dessert:

When you come to pay, it’s a simple process.

You don’t need to tell anyone in the restaurant that you intend to spend (or earn) DISCOVERY Dollars. Book, order and eat as usual.

On our table was this small metal marker with a QR code on it:

The QR code incorporates your table number so you don’t need to ask for it. Your bill is immediately pulled up.

Paying with DISCOVERY Dollars?

Click the very clear Global Hotel Alliance banner which will appear on your phone and log in to your account to use your DISCOVERY Dollars:

Here is the key thing you need to know. You cannot pay the VAT or the service charge element with DISCOVERY Dollars so some cash will be required.

After our meal, we had a bill of £211.60 (there was some champagne involved too, not pictured!):

When I logged in to my GHA account, I was able to pay £153.40 using $206 DISCOVERY Dollars, leaving a balance of £58.20 (the VAT and service charge element) to pay.

There is no dubious FX rate used here. $206 was pretty much equal to £153.40 last Thursday.

Earning DISCOVERY Dollars?

It’s an identical process.

Scan the QR code on your table and click the GHA banner pictured above which will appear on your phone screen.

Log in to your GHA account. Select ‘D$0’ to link your booking to your DISCOVERY Dollars account without redeeming.

You will earn DISCOVERY Dollars at the same rate as you would from a hotel – between 4% and 7% of your pre-VAT, pre-service charge balance, depending on your GHA status.

Find out more

If you have some DISCOVERY Dollars to spend, or want to top up your balance next time you eat out, you can learn more about spending and earning at The Wolseley Collection on this page of the GHA website.

Thanks to GHA for topping up my DISCOVERY Dollars balance to allow us to try this out!

PS. GHA has just launched a paid status match to most major hotel and airline programmes – click here. A British Airways Gold member, or a top tier member of any major hotel scheme, can get a match to top tier Titanium status for $150. This is valid until the end of 2026. You will get $75 back in DISCOVERY Dollars to spend on your next stay – or at The Wolseley Collection!

  • Lumma says:

While it makes using these discovery dollars easier, scanning QR codes to pay in high end restaurants seems like another way of further eroding customer service

    • Rob says:

It is a little odd, but then Marriott tries to get you to do mobile check in at a St Regis or Ritz Carlton.

    • Ian says:

Agree to an extent, however waiting for the bill is the worst part of the restaurant experience. You have to catch the eye of the waiter, wait for them to get the bill, wait for them to get their card machine, etc. This is so much quicker and easier. Pay when I want, leave when I want. No hold ups. Also speeds up general service if servers aren’t having to take payments.

    • CJD says:

I’m not sure I agree, this should free up servers to pour drinks, take orders or clear plates from their other tables, increasing the level of service they’re giving you while you’re actually dining.

Waiting around to pay the bill is a total faff and I think you’re more likely to leave with a bad impression of otherwise perfectly fine service if you’re delayed from leaving when you want to because people were busy serving other tables.

      • Lady London says:

There’s an easy answer to that.

Had very poor service during a meal in one of the PF Changs in Portland and when it became time for the bill, despite giving a series of the usual signals that give a waiter time but tell them to come soon, for about 10 minutes, it was obvious that I was being deliberately ignored. Been on both sides of this one so I knew.

After 15 minutes I’d had enough of this. So I gathered my stuff, stood up and ambled over to the cash desk with card obviously in hand to pay my bill. Whereupon suddenly the waiter appeared – probably to protect his commission – and I paid the bill to the hostess.

I can’t remember if I was lily-livered enough to still pay the service charge on the bill but I probably did. Unsure if I tipped though.

Standing up to leave if they’re not bringing your bill within a reasonable period will always get their attention – just keep your card very obviously in hand and head to waiter station or cash desk.

    • Occasional Ranter says:

I wish all restaurants in the UK did the same as most do in NZ, which is just to leave you to pay at the cashier desk on your way out.

    • Bagoly says:

At anything below fine dining I definitely prefer to be able to be more in control of the payment by doing it without staff in the way. I haven’t yet experienced it in a top place – I understand the jarring effect of electronics, but I incline to agree with Ian and CJD about the positive aspects.

  • Sam S says:

A warning to anyone intending to use this restaurant as part of the Amex Platinum dining credit.
It was previously reported on the forms that this method of payment at this restaurant fails to trigger the dining credit in the usual manner and involved a lot back and forth with Amex to get it resolved.

    • Rob says:

Could be. My card says ‘thewolseley.com’ as merchant.

      • Andrew J says:

It won’t trigger the credit then. Always ask for a physical bill and the card machine if you want to use your Amex credit.

      • Bagoly says:

Does that mean that one needs to use a card that is enabled for online transactions?
Where possible, e.g. at (Transfer)Wise I have my physical card barred from online transactions to reduce risk in case of theft, and and use a virtual card for online transactions.

  • Occasional Ranter says:

Very easy to match to titanium: ihg platinum or Radisson VIP is enough. And retaining Titanium status also v easy as long as you’re travelling around widely enough to find 3 different GHA brands in a year.

Surprised how good the perks still are considering the barrier to entry is so low.

    • TJ says:

Yes but only as a paid status match as far as I am aware:
GHA Discovery Platinum = $100 fee (D$50 gift)
GHA Discovery Titanium = $150 fee (D$75 gift)

      • Occasional Ranter says:

£55 net cost is a pretty cheap way into double room upgrades, 4pm checkout, etc etc. I think I’ve got about £50-100 a night of genuine extra value out of my titanium status in the last year.

        • Vit says:

Thanks for the tips. Decided to look into this as planning some stays in the next 12 months. Hilton Orchard booked for a couple nights, maybe not a bad to idea for a couple night more in Pan Pacific!?

          • Occasional Ranter says:

This is Singapore right ? I had a good experience in the parkroyal there. Haven’t tried the pan Pacific.

  • cranzle says:

Does anyone know how to get Rotana status recognised at Corinthia (and spend points credited)?

    • Rob says:

Rotana is not integrated yet. When done (Christmas?) your Rotana status will become GHA status.

  • Dave says:

FYI – No Virgin Atlantic status match available

  • Cicero says:

    Great article! Very helpful.

  • ColinThames says:

So how many Discovery Dollars did you get back for the cash element Rob?

  • ColinThames says:

I love the Wolseley and the Delaunay. Both great. The idea of picking up some D$ seems a no brainer but nowhere in the Discovery pages does it say what the earn rate is at the restaurants. And does it vary according to status?
@Rob some more detail would be great.

The upgrade process with StatusMatch is also quite opaque. It’s only at the end you are told what level you’ll get and the cost. I wonder how many abandoned applications they get.
Are there lower and cheaper matches available?

    • The Savage Squirrel says:

Indeed, there was no detail about how to EARN at Wolseley etc all in the article; something which would interest quite a lot of readers I think. Do you have to get your GHA card scanned by staff? Must you pay through the app? Or wot?

    • Rob says:

Earn rate is same as for hotels eg 4-7%.
