Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

‘Combine My Avios’ is back to Iberia, Aer Lingus and Vueling – but with new rules

‘Combine My Avios’ is back and working!

As we covered two weeks ago, the service had been taken down for transfers between Iberia, Vueling, Aer Lingus and British Airways. Qatar Airways and Finnair were not impacted.

We had assumed that this was due to rampant Avios theft, which was taking advantage of a vulnerability to allow fraudsters to open Iberia Club accounts and suck Avios out of your British Airways Club account.

The good news is that everything seems to be up and running in a new format.

How does it work?

All ‘Combine My Avios’ transactions can now be done from this page at avios.com.

You will see this:

combine my avios is back

For Iberia, Vueling, Aer Lingus and Loganair, you click the top arrow and you end up here:

Combine My Avios is back

You are now creating permanent links

This is the important bit.

The first time you move Avios to or from an Iberia, Vueling or Aer Lingus account, you create a permanent link.

This is new, although it is the route that Qatar Airways, Finnair and Loganair have always used.

When you return to the page in the bottom screenshot, you will see your account numbers and balances for each programme.

Going forward, you do NOT need to re-enter your Iberia, Vueling or Aer Lingus account details each time you want to make a transfer. The details are permanently stored at avios.com and each transfer can be done very quickly, albeit with multiple levels of 2FA security to clear.

I tried it out last night and it seemed to work fine.

You are no longer forced to transfer via a BA account

You no longer need to use British Airways as a conduit, except for Qatar Airways and Finnair.

You can now transfer Iberia to Aer Lingus, Aer Lingus to Vueling, Vueling to Loganair etc in one transaction. You do NOT need to move your Avios into British Airways Club and then out again.

What data do you need to link accounts?

To quote:

The first name, surname, and email address registered on each account must match. If your date of birth is registered on either account, it must also match to complete the linking process.

Accounts cannot be unlinked

Take note! However, you MUST link your accounts to do a transfer now, so there isn’t much you can do about it.

Transfers can no longer be done via the call centre

This could be frustrating for some people. You can only link your accounts online and transfers can only be done online. The call centre can no longer help you.

There are no longer time limits before you can move Avios

You previously had to be a member of Iberia Club for 90 days, and have ‘earned’ an Avios on your account, before you could transfer in or out.

Effective immediately, there are no restrictions on when new accounts can begin to send and receive points.

Congratulations to the Avios team for getting this up and running. Not only should it make your accounts more secure (and end the current Iberia fraud) but it will make future Avios transfers easier.

The ability to move Avios between Aer Lingus, Vueling, Loganair and Iberia without having to go via British Airways first is especially welcome.

Good god , why can’t they just get it together… splash out £100 , and get it all together !! 🤣🤣

  • david says:

Must be the year end bonus as this was impressively quick. I would presume they were working on this for months on the backend as the IB thefts have been going for a good year or so. Read QR fraud 1-2x times in the forum so I wonder how that got through. Good day all.

  • Mouse says:

I can see how there is now better security for those who have linked an Iberia account to their BA account, but how does this change anything for those who haven’t?

    • Rob says:

Hackers were using the old CMA scheme’s vulnerabilities to link newly created Iberia accounts to YOUR BA account and then draining it. This shouldn’t be possible now. If you have a linked Iberia account, it definitely won’t be possible.

      • Mouse says:

But the way I read it a hacker could still do that if my BA account is not linked to an Iberia account, by creating an Iberia account in my name. (I assume they also need my BA password, but I assume that was also the case before too, and the hacked accounts were probably using the same password that had been compromised in a data breach on a different site.) It’s not clear what has changed for anyone who has not linked their BA account to an Iberia account.

        • ChrisBCN says:

There is the extra security of 2FA, except of course if you hack into the BA account (which I don’t think always asks for 2FA), change the mobile, then you can defeat the 2FA….

“Effective immediately, there are no restrictions on when new accounts can begin to send and receive points.”
This actually sounds worse for users who haven’t linked an account yet.
Hopefully at least the MFA security part has been strengthened.

76 avios that were stuck in iberia finally liberated!

  • Arthur says:

Does anyone know if you can you link a BA account if it’s in a household account to be able to move avios between BA and Iberia?

    • Rob says:

You can move YOUR Avios but not those of your HHA members. They would need to individually move their own and the total would not recombine in Iberia as I don’t think they do household accounts like BA does?

Remember you can merge Avios from other people into your account for €10 via Finnair if you want the entire household pot in your personal account.

    • Mr. AC says:

Yes, so what I do is “store” my personal Avios in Qatar so that when I spend for redemptions from the HHA I drain the rest of the household and not myself.

  • TimM says:

How complicated can they possibly make it? How many people do they employ on high salaries running such duplicate systems? Just have one central Avios Bank!

    • Speedbird676 says:

I’m with you on this. Reminds me of the “de-merger” (I can’t think of a better word) of Vueling and Aer Lingus from avios.com a few years ago, where they sent out comprehensive instructions of what would happen to my accounts and then did something completely different.

    • Mark says:

Hopefully not, as the ability to move Avios is very helpful if you want to control which accounts Avios are debited from when booking with BA from a household account. That would be less of an issue if you were able to combine Avios across different household members with all airlines that use Avios as their currency. However, as things stand, consolidating your Avios balance with a single member as far as possible makes it more likely you can book what you need directly with Qatar and others.

  • Andy says:

Anyone know how long it takes to get Avios refunded and my ba account unlocked since getting points stolen? My 340k Avios were drained from my account 5 weeks ago now and ba were alerted instantly.

    • SammyJ says:

321k were nicked from my BA account to Iberia about a month ago – in fairness to BA they were quite quick – I was back up and running in a week. Which doesn’t help you at all unfortunately. I’ve heard there isn’t much opportunity to gee them up either.

  • Steve says:

Just thinking of the best approach for long term security, should I make a Qatar and Iberia account and link them altogether?
