Booked my return flights from Cape Town on line at midnight last night.
Need to call to get the booking merged into the outbound flight that used the companion voucher.

I did need to top up the avios needed to enable me to do this, what was helpful was that I was able to boost the same transactions twice on both mine and my partners avios accounts which made this a little more cost effective.
