Well done Rob and all on the site update.
Can I please sense check understanding about extending a 241.
241 currently valid until April 2022. I intended to use for a March 2022 booking. If this is cancelled by BA or by me, I understand that the voucher will become a FTV (along with the fees paid) and be valid for a further 2 years?
Thanks
BA confusingly use too many ‘voucher’ terms.
If you book something with your 241, and the flights are subsequently cancelled, or you decide not to travel, you can elect to have a refund (which you currently have to do by phone) OR a ‘Future Travel Voucher’.
A FTV is really just the existing booking on hold – or in credit. BA keep everything you have paid for you to use in future for new dates. You might have to add more avios or fees if the new dates cost more of either, there will need to be reward availability, and the companion must remain the same. The FTV remains valid until September 23 and your 241 is kept ‘alive’ within it until that date.
Thanks tiriavpo, very clear. Thank you.
Tiriavpo, Are you restricted to the original destination with the FTV or can you effectively use the ‘frozen’ 2-4-1, Avios and taxes to book anywhere with availability until Sept 2023. Thanks in advance.
Yes, it can be wherever you want, provided there is avios availability. The only other subtle difference is all travel has to be complete by 30 Sep 23 – the normal 241 restriction is that just the outbound has to be before the expiry date.
You also can’t change the passenger names on the booking. So make sure you make the dummy booking with someone you like. 🙂
If BA are the ones doing the cancelling you have a lot more flexibility I believe. Freedom to rebook to the same (or close by) destination at your convenience whether there is Avios availability or not.
Hope you don’t mind but would like to add to this thread here to make sure I understand the process.
I have a 241 expiring in July 22 and I won’t be able to make use of it till later. I plan to make a dummy booking so I can use for a trip to New York in Sep 22.
So I think the steps are:
1. make a ONE way ‘dummy booking’ using my 241 to a low cost destination – e.g. LHR -> MAN economy for my wife and I – this will cost a small amount of avios and GBP
2. ring up BA contact centre and ask them to cancel the dummy booking and I will get an FTV which will wrap the 241 voucher, the spent avios and GBP amount.
3. ring up BA contact centre again and ask them to apply the FTV to a future trip to New York in Sep 22 for:
– the same passengers as per dummy booking
– an upgrade to Club on the outbound leg (even though I booked economy for the dummy booking)
– add an economy return flight
I would then pay the uplift in Avios and GBP at this time.
And a few questions –
1. is the process described above right?
2. how long would I need to wait between booking the dummy destination and calling the contact centre?
3. can I cancel the dummy booking and book the new destination at the same time?
Many thanks for any advice 🙂
Sorry this might be a dupe posting .. but I wanted to make sure I understand the process.
