Forums Frequent flyer programs Virgin Flying Club 241 upgrade voucher – transferable?

  • 249 posts

I have a 241 upgrade voucher expiring in Dec. I have 72,000 points and my friend ( who would be travelling with me ) has only 15,000.
Having booked 12 weeks holiday already this year I really can’t take more than a weekend.
Can I get any use from this voucher and this many points or do I write this off?
Won’t be getting anymore points as no longer have a Virgin credit card. No status either.
No idea why I even bothered getting this. I only ever fly One World.

If I can’t use it can I gift it ?

I had a similar dilemma… Booked a long weekend in TLV on 6/Oct, to go in November last year, which obviously didn’t work out…!

I ended up booking a long weekend in NYC in May this year, used the 20% off offer to book in Premium Economy and used the voucher to upgrade myself to Upper Class. Quite excited about that now 🙂

How many points is needed for that?
I know the info will be on here somewhere but I’m shockingly useless at finding anything.

You can get the pricing from SeatSpy or I think it shows somewhere on the Virgin website (or you have enough points for a dummy booking, if only one-way) Varies between peak and off peak. People have posted here that you can use the voucher to book for someone else.

You can also use it on a cash booking, if that’s an option.

Opinions seem to vary as to whether it’s book by, or fly by though!

New York is 35,000 off-peak (standard) return in Premium, plus taxes and fees. You have enough therefore to get two of you return to New York, the voucher would upgrade you both to Upper Class in one direction.

Taxes and fees are high though – around £1000 each return in UC to the US, though travelling one way in Premium should reduce that a bit.

Alternatively you could book a redemption in a mix of Economy and/or Premium and use the voucher as a 2for1. That would need between 20,000 and 35,000 points off-peak depending on what mix of classes you choose – again plus (lower) taxes and fees, or a bit more for peak dates.

You can use your friend’s points towards part of it but I think it can only be split out according to the points required for each sector and person. In practice that probably means they could contribute 10,000 for economy in one direction (off-peak) but they don’t otherwise have enough.

The redemption charts and peak/off-peak dates are here:

Thanks all. There’s nowhere that we are want to go for a weekend. Have been to New York so many times and am over it now. With very little time I think we are stuck. I think I was dreaming that somehow the voucher or the points could be used short haul on another airline.
I suppose the points can be used for other things.
Can I gift the voucher to another person ?

You might want to hang on for the Virgin cruise offers which popped up last year -80,000 points for two. Doesn’t help with the voucher but definitely better value than paying the surcharges!

    Yes, you can:

The points can be used short haul on other Skyteam airlines, including Air France and KLM. You may find they don’t save you much though on a European flight with the taxes and fees that would be charged (there is no equivalent of BA Reward Flight Saver). The vouchers can only be used on Virgin Atlantic.

Another alternative is redeeming the points via Virgin Red, although again the value probably isn’t great in the main.

The points never expire so you may be better off using them on a Skyteam flight later on without the voucher.

Boston could also be good for a long weekend….

My best use of Virgin points so far has been domestic flights on AeroMexico! You might be able to use them in a similar way on a longer trip – we are on BA to and from MEX, but using AM to get to and from PVR.
    Delta is another possibility.

@Annie you mention 12 weeks of holidays already booked, are any of those to destinations that Virgin fly? Once found myself in a similar dilemma (expiring voucher) and amended my existing bookings so one leg was Virgin upgraded with the voucher, saved myself some Avios and no change to my travel plans.

+1 on this, in January last year we were due to fly home MIA-LHR-MAN but Virgin availability MCO-MAN popped up a few days before our return so we changed to that.

Thanks for all the great tips.
We’ve been to Boston a lot.
None of the trips already booked are served by Virgin.
Have an Australia trip next year so could possibly use points for internal flights but fiends we are travelling with are wedded to Oneword, as am I really, which begs the question, why did I ever bother with the Virgin vouchers and points!
I think the prize goes to Virgin cruises. As long as an offer comes along and I can use it for next year then that works perfectly.

I’m currently in negotiations to increase my holiday entitlement, although I think I’m pushing the limits now. Have reached the stage of not needing to earn more, not ready to retire but want more time for travel.

My friend is trying to transfer her points to me. Is it correct that it costs £15 for every 1000 points transferred? I thought it was now a £10 flat fee.

You can share your Virgin Points with the people you love. And that means you and your crew can club your points together and bring all those epic rewards closer than ever. Point Made.

By transferring your points (for a small fee of £10) to another Virgin Red member, that long-needed weekend away or gig-of-a-lifetime can now be ticked off the vision board – it’s happening.

Related question, how long does it take for the voucher to turn up in your account after spending the £10k?

    11,431 posts

It’s just one line (if that) on your account activity. 2 of mine appeared shortly after the next statement date, the most recent one around the start of my new collection year before I’d even spent any money (go figure!) so it pays to keep checking so you know how long you have to use it!

Ok so better double check spend deffo over £10k

@HampshireHog If you call Flying Club, they’ll tell you all active vouchers and their expiry dates. You might even end up with extra – I’ve had that in previous years thanks to Virgin IT!
