I have 5 hours to kill in Vienna airport between flights. Anything interesting to do as I believe the lounge isn’t all that great.
Depends which lounge? Austrian lounge? I thought the Vienna lounge was one of the best third party lounges I’ve been too. Tough as by the time you get into centre it will be almost time to come back, perhaps just explore the airport?
Oh, I’ve heard mixed reviews about it. I’ll just have to explore the airport and take loads of stuff to read.
The CAT train will get you in to Landstrasse in 16 mins, 25 euro return but if you buy before 11/4 there’s a sale ging 20% off the ticket valid for 6 months.
So half an hour each way with walking etc and you have plenty of time, 2-3 hours in the city. You could hop on a sightseeing bus, visit a museum or two, have lunch. Depends what you like.
The CAT is like Gatwick Express (and the Oslo airport express train), it’s a few minutes faster than the local train but double the price (not like the Heathrow Express because the HEx is actually faster).
What makes it worse is the CAT and the local train alternate every 15 minutes. So if it’s imperative that you get to the city ASAP you should just get the first train to depart when you get to the station, leaving enough time to buy your ticket. If you just miss a CAT, the next local train will be nearly in the city by the time the next CAT departs. Also in many cases you need to take a local train to your actual destination anyway.
Thanks all. I’ll see what time I get there and decide on the day but have a plan of what to do in case we do go into town.
We killed 5 hours no problem in the Vienna Lounge last November and I’d highly recommend it. Accessed through DragonPass. The rest of the airport is a bit crap, and very confusing. We are normally pretty solid navigators for this sort of thing and it still took us about 35 minutes to find it – effectively had to cross the border to get into the right terminal, then its hidden away up a spiral staircase.
As has been said, it’s a very good lounge, among the best 3rd party lounge I’ve visited. Plentiful good food & drink, and almost deserted when we visited.
