BA didn’t load any luggage on LHR-OSL flight on 29 June. I filed the delayed baggage report with Menzies Aviation Oslo, including details that I would only be in Oslo till 03 July, then on to Munich. The BA online missing baggage report and phone conversations with Menzies Oslo have all said the bags are on the way to Munich. One bag was delivered in Munich today (02 Aug), but other 3 are still not here. I’ve also filed a complaint with BA, but get no useful information.
As of today, Menzies Oslo says it is now in the hands of BA. On a call today with BA Luggage in Munich I was told my missing baggage file was closed on 06 July. I have Gold status with BA, but that doesn’t seem to help with anything. Short of time-travel to place AirTags in the missing bags, any other suggestions? After 5 weeks, I’m getting desperate. Thank you for any ideas.
Wow…. And quite frightening to read. You have my every sympathy and I hope your bags are eventually located. I’m planning to qualify for Silver status so that I can benefit from the increased baggage allowance in order relocate personal belongings in chunks as part of my emigration (since Brexit there are now monetary limits to goods you can import on one journey). It would be frightening to contemplate that BA could permanently lose (or just end up auctioning off after they’ve deemed luggage permanently lost) items of sentimental or historical value that are irreplaceable, while flying on a simple A to B short-haul flight. I’m increasingly thinking it’s not worth the risk and I’m better off driving things in my own car, returning periodically for another load, forgetting about status and only flying with things that wouldn’t be a disaster if they were lost.
Incidentally, I’m not sure if merely having AirTags in your luggage will help. It’s all very well to point to a screen and saying that you can see the bags are at Heathrow airport, they need to be officially found. If the tags are damaged or missing, they won’t be able to do this. We’re all dependent on the ground handling team working sufficiently well such that bags don’t end up being dumped and forgotten about, or they’re so overloaded there is a sea of luggage in the wrong place and eventually they give up with trying to reunite bags with owners, pay out compensation based on the weight and auction off the lost luggage to minimise the financial loss to the carrier.
After 21 days you can declare them lost and demand compensation under Montreal Convention even if they show up subsequently.
File a claim. You can claim up to 1288 SDR (Special Drawing Rights). You can find the current exchange rate for SDRs here https://www.imf.org/en/About/Factsheets/Sheets/2016/08/01/14/51/Special-Drawing-Right-SDR
Is there not a risk that if you push for this the airline will write-off the bag and cease looking for it? A great many people, myself included, would rather have their bag back than compensation. I don’t know to what degree the hunt for bags involves manual labour and people actually wanting to find it, versus the airline sitting back and if it eventually gets bleeped into the system somewhere in the world, they’ll send it to you, but they won’t do anything out of the ordinary to locate it.
They will most likely have already stopped searching. Unless you have airtags I doubt you’ll find it after a month.

In the current environment where there are thousands of bags piled up in so many airports around the world that’s a big assumption. Historically, we have twice had suitcases returned to us completely out of the blue weeks/months later. BA can’t cope at present but I think they will try to work their way through all the lost bags. While it’s lovely to say you can “demand” XYZ, many of us, like @Londonsteve would actually rather have our own things back vs the cash. This constant rush for compensation/litigation is not only rather distasteful but pays no regard to the fact that getting back to the status quo ante might be better all round.
UPDATE – thank you everyone for the input and discussion. As of today (09 August 2022), 3 of the 4 missing bags have been delivered in Munich. One bag is still missing, but it shows in the BA system now as being prepared for delivery, so there seems to be a glimmer of hope.
Except for 2 considerate and engaged Menzies Aviation Oslo employees (who did phone me about the bags), no one at BA ever reached out about this situation. Had I not persisted in weekly calls to Menzies Aviation and the persistent updates to my BA complaint file, I am not sure whether I would have seen these bags again.
I am still stunned that it has taken nearly 6 weeks to account for the baggage. Had my trip involved some exotic distant location I may have been more understanding, but LHR, Oslo and Munich are not that far off the beaten path.
