Forums Other Destination advice 8 days in Vancouver – Vancouver Island or up the Sunshine Coast Highway?

  • 50 posts

Would be very grateful for any advice on how to spend 8 days in and around Vancouver.

Currently plan 1 night in Vancouver then head to either:
4 or 5 days in Vancouver Island or alternatively up the Sunshine Coast Highway to Secret Cover/ Madeira Park.
Then 1 or 2 day in Squamish
    Final night back in Vancouver.

We will have a car for travel, just wonder if waiting for the ferries and the travel to Vancouver Island is worth the effort for a relatively short break.

    Thank you for your thoughts.

Vancouver Island has a lot going for it. For me, the ferries are part of the charm, and easily worthwhile for 4 or 5 days on the island.

What time of year would you be visiting?

@lyn thanks for the comments, will be visiting at the end of August, early September – are the mosquites really bad there at that time of year?

I’ve just asked about mosquitos. Apparently they tend to disappear when the weather turns cooler sometime around early September, and they are usually only a problem as you get further from urban areas. This applies to the whole Vancouver island / Sunshine Coast / Vancouver area, it is just a matter of distance from populated areas.

Remember there are several ferry routes linking the Island with the mainland and with the Gulf Islands. A circular route Vancouver to Victoria (prettier route) or Nanaimo and then Comox back to Powell River on the Sunshine Coast is apparently quite popular. Some of the smaller islands could be worth visiting on day trips as well.

We are on vancouver island in august some years ago, it was warm but we never noticed a mosquito problem. I’d love to go back to vancouver island, great wildlife viewing. The opportunity to see bears and whales was the reason we went to VI rather then the sunshine coast and we weren’t disappointed.
