Forums Frequent flyer programs The British Airways Club Adding a return sector later?

    Hi

I need to go to Vegas this summer for a 40th birthday but there’s no availability on the outbound on BA, but there is on Virgin in economy which I do have enough points for.

So I was wondering if I can book the return on BA with my 241 as a one way can I add a return at a later date like you can if you book a year in advance and the return isn’t available? Or would I need to lock something in now and pay a change fee when I decide where I want to go?

My other option is flying to the USA a few days earlier to a different airport with BA

If you’re asking can you book the currently available homebound LAS-LHR before the outbound LHR-LAS becomes available and add that to the trip then no.

You can’t book out of sequence.

You could fly outbound on VS, then use your 241 for the inbound on BA. You would then have 12 months to use the other “half” of the 241 for a 2nd trip as long as it falls within the booking rules. So, for example, you could use the other half of the 241 to fly to LAX, then maybe more Virgin points to come home. It depends if this is something you would be likely to be doing though.

So if you’re also asking can you book say LHR-SFO (own arrangements) LAS-LHR and then hope to change the LHR-SFO to LAS if availability opens up then yes this would be an option.

Yes this is what I meant. But what I want to know is would I need to book LHR-LAX when I book the LAS-LON flight or can I book this at a later date? I’m pretty sure that I can later change the LHR-LAX to something else as long as it’s within the open jar rules right? As in the destination needs to be closer to Las Vegas than London? So most of the Americas would work but nothing eastbound?

To be able to use the 241, you need to book a “return” sector as soon as it’s released or risk BA refusing to add it (or refund the 50%) avios. But it only has to be flown within 12 months of the outbound.

I’m not sure that’s at all correct.
You can always amend a BA Avios booking by paying the change fees associated, if you wish to add a return leg to a current booking not matter when the return sector was released. It’s easy enough to call up and add a return leg – paying the extra taxes and Avios and there have been examples of this recently, also with folks adding on domestic sectors (or MAD-LHR for IB flights).

You cannot book the LON-LAX flight after you’ve booked the LAS-LON flight if the former is dated before the latter.

There have been reports of agents refusing to add a leg or refund the avios because the inbound leg had already been released when the outbound was booked. I probably didn’t explain it very well!

They shouldn’t if folks are calling up … HUCA.
