Forums Payment cards American Express Additional cardholder – different address

  • 29 posts

My Dad recently passed away so his credit card accounts will soon close. My Mum was an additional card holder so she will also lose her cards. She’s not the most savvy person with money so I thought about adding her as an additional cardholder to one of my credit cards. She also lives by herself at a different address to me.

I tried to add her to my Barclaycard account but they have asked for ID to prove she lives with me, so that is a no go. Is it the same criteria with Amex? Or can anyone think of a solution to my issue?

I’m fairly certain additional cardholders don’t need to reside at the same address.

Note that Additional Cards are also known as Supplementary Cards. Supplementary Cards can be requested for anyone aged 18 or over with a permanent UK address, and is subject to approval. If approved, you (the primary Cardmember) will be responsible for any spending on your Account made by the Supplementary Cardmember.

You can add someone else that’s not in your address. I’ve done this. The card just gets sent to your address and then you’ll have to give your mum the card.

As long as they are a U.K. resident over 18, it doesn’t matter where they live.

    Just checked my Barclay card:

    Who can be a cardholder?
Anyone you add to your Barclaycard account must be
    • A close family member – for example, your partner, parent, sibling, child or child’s partner
    • Over 18 years old
    • Living at your address
You can have up to 4 additional cardholders

Amex is much more flexible – they don’t need to be at your address, or a family member.

+1. I added my brother to my Plat, was no problem at all.

Thanks all, yes Amex is much easier and allowed for a different address. They have just asked for ID for my Mum, which I’ll scan and send over today. Strange how Barclaycard were so rigid with rules for their additional cardholders.

Fortunately my Mum only tends to use credit cards when buying food and fuel so *hopefully* will adjust to using an Amex for the first time!
