Hi,
I just booked (with BA by phone) for my parents to fly with Aer Lingus from Manchester to Boston via Dublin (they appreciate clearing security in Ireland).
I booked by phone because I couldn’t find a way to book this online (friendly pointers welcome).
The guy I spoke to was helpful and patient – he had some IT issues and it took ages as he had to do a lot of the booking manually, so thankfully he waived the phone booking charge.
The question I have and the reason for my post is, how much should this have cost in Avios and £ GBP fees when using a BA Amex 2-4-1 companion voucher?
They are flying out on 4th July and return on 14th July.
The MAN-DUB legs are economy (due to availability).
They’re not staying over in Dublin on either journey.
We were debited 49,000 Avios and the fees were £1338.
To me, the cash cost seemed high and the Avios cost seemed low (though I believe they are lower with Aer Lingus).
Any knowledgeable verdict you can provide on the cash/avios costs would be great.
Thanks,
Paul
49k is wrong.
The taxes are £466 out and £228 in, for a total of £1388 x 2 people so that’s correct.
If you wanted to pay peanuts in taxes you should have booked each flight separately BUT I accept that you want your parents to be protected in case of a misconnect.
Thanks Rob, there’s precious little detail in the confirmation, hence my query here before I consult BA about it.
“Fare Details GBP0.00 + Tax/Fee/Charge GBP1388.84 = GBP 1388.84”
Further down it says,
“Taxes/fees/charges
Government, authority and airport charges Per adult
Total government, authority and airport charges*
> More information
GBP 0.00
Total British Airways fees and surcharges
> More information
GBP 0.00
Total taxes, fees and surcharges per person GBP 0.00”
There’s no mention anywhere of the Avios or the 2-4-1 voucher.
How much cash and Avios should the charges be??
Thanks Rob.
Yes they were concerned about splitting the booking.
Sounds like the cash cost is right then?
Many thanks
49k avios does seem very low, what does it say on the booking? Are you sure they are booked in business class on both long haul sectors? You would also have been charged for the MAN-DUB legs as these aren’t UK domestics (which would have been free), which would have bumped up both avios and cash elements.
Also, just out of interest, how did you make a booking with your parents’ voucher – are you an authorised person on their account?
If it’s a family account, Avios seems to come out of all accounts. ?!?!?!
If it’s a family account, Avios seems to come out of all accounts. ?!?!?!
If the booking is made via a HHA the avios do indeed come pro rata from every member in the account so yes this could be the case here.
