Dear Forumites.
I’m looking to use my AMEX 2 for 1 voucher for a return flight to Beijing in Business.
Total Price is;
180,000 Avios + £900
or the option of
152,000 Avios + £1,360
125,000 Avios + £1,680
108,000 Avios + £2,600
90,000 Avios + £3,400
62,500 Avios + £4,000
Which is the best option from above? I want to get value for my Avios points.
If anyone can do it in order of the first best option, second, third etc that would be great!
The cash price for this ticket is £2,599.71 x 2 = £5,199.42 in Business.
My final destination is TOKYO, Japan. However, there has not been any availability on seatspy.com for a few months now and I doubt there will be for June 2024.
So that’s why I am travelling to Beijing (new Club World Suite) to connect with a flight on JAL which I believe I can use my Avios points for Beijing PEK to Tokyo Hanada HND rtn?
Thanks, in anticipation.
Generally agreed approach is to use a ‘value’ of 1p per Avios and add the Avios and cash amount to compare totals. On that basis 180k Avios plus £900 gives you the lowest combined total.
I take the cash element from the full cash fare and divide the result by the Avios payment to get a price per Avios. 2.4, 2.5, 2.8, 2.4, 2.0p etc. So the 125k Avios option is best per Avios.
However, I would not pay £5200 for 2 seats to Beijing so that’s nonsense.
If you use £1800 each as an example of fair value, the first three options are all 1.5p per Avios. So I’d pick 180k as well.

I have 3x one way LHR-Shanghai August 2024 for £21,000. Do people actually pay this?
LHR -SIN Avios Cash Cash Saving Avios Value (p). COST
Cash Fair 0 £5,199.42 0 0. £5,199.42
Offer 180,000 £900 £4299.42 2.39p 2700
Offer 152,000 £1360 £3839.42 2.53p 2880
Offer 125000 £1680 £3159.42 2.53p 2930
Offer 108000 £2600 £2599.42 2.41p 3680
Offer 90000 £3400 £1799.42 2p 4300
Offer 62500 £4000 £1,199.42 1.92p 4625
Does anyone agree with my working outs for this?
Personally, I would choose 180K avios option but strangely it looks less good in terms of avios value?

That’s great and all, but, instead of doing all that, why don’t you fix your username before you get put on porno spam mailing lists?
The above came out funny so I’ll try that a different way.
If the cash fare is £5,199.42, the different options offer costs and avios values as:
180K for £2700. 2.39p
152K for £2880. 2.53p
125K for £2930. 2.53p
1080K for £3680 2.41p
900K for £4300 2p
625K for £4625. 1.92p
Do people agree that the maths is correct here? It looks odd to me!
