I wish to send some money to a relative through PayPal as friends and family using my Amex card
Do you still get the membership points for the transaction and does it also count as spend towards hitting bonus target
Works fine.
Abuse it and PayPal will freeze your money, report you as a possible money launderer and generally make your life hell.
I’ve not used the card to do that before , I hope a one off is not frowned on
As long as there is lots of other reasonable activity on both paypals and the amount you are F&Fing is small in comparison to the other activity you will be ok.
Hi Rob, any tips on what would be considered abusing it. How about a one off transaction for a £4k, to help meet a £5k target?

Risk of amex and/or PayPal barring you
We sent a few sets of 2k over 2 month period to our daughter, marked wedding expenses, completely legitimate spend. Was nice to get the Bonvoy points. The odd 200 here and there to kids for gifts, all clearly written in the space for reason….
Do these transactions get charged with cash advance fees on American Express?

No
Everyone needs to view Amex as a friend lending to you.
If you do lots of normal spend and a decent level of goods and services PayPal spend then your friend sees they can trust you (internal credit score). Sending some cash to friends by PayPal could clearly be considered reasonable as part of that pattern… it’s an electronic version of sending cash.
On the other hand, if you do little normal spend and rarely use Amex on PayPal and then suddenly send thousands through Friends and Family, costing amex money (especially if it’s most of the spend for a bonus), then you may well find Amex doesn’t want to be your friend any more and may cancel your card, and bonus, and refuse to be a friend in future.
PayPal of course are also careful about who they have as friends.
