Forums Payment cards American Express Amex Business Gold sign-up bonus withheld

  • 33 posts

    Morning,

I signed up for the amex business gold back in March under the 60,000 welcome bonus offer due to the news that restrictions had been lifted on the sign up offer. Having not recieved my bonus I followed up with Amex who are saying I am no eligible given I had a card until Feb-24?

This wasn’t my understanding of the recent news that anyone accepted is eligible?

    Anyone else had an issue?

Are you referring to this article?

    https://www.headforpoints.com/2025/04/07/ends-tue-get-up-to-60000-points-and-no-fee-in-year-1-with-amex-business-gold/

Hopefully Rob might be able to clarify, if so.

    Yep – exactly the one.

Amex chat have come back and told me no terms have changed, and ‘regarding the business cards, this is now only an internal process. It is similar to how bonuses work for personal cards and so for now you may use those terms for reference.’

I have pointed out that’s not how terms work….

They are wrong. There are no rules now, and you don’t need me to tell you that – it is clear from the application process.

There seems to be an IT issue which is stopping some people getting bonuses on the Business cards though, I’ve had about 5 people flag issues.

For clarity, a) Amex told us directly the rule had changed – it’s not an IT error that the application form shows no rules and b) Amex reads every single word written about them on here by us and is on to us if there is anything they don’t like. A huge chunk of articles with incorrect bonus info is simply inconceivable.

Thanks Rob – exactly my understanding! I spent an hour on chat with 3 different agents this morning to no avail. Below are some direct excerpts:

‘I appreciate your effort on checking the terms, Peter. I can sense how much you value earning a welcome offer for a newly opened card.

Regarding the terms of business cards, I did some research and as of now, this is only an internal process for business cards. It is similar to how bonuses works on personal cards, for now, you may use the same terms as your reference where if you apply for the same card, you can only earn one welcome bonus for it.’

‘I completely understand where you’re coming from on this and I know you’re looking forward to the welcome offer. I’ve reviewed my resources and I can confirm there were no recent changes to Amex UK terms for welcome offers on personal and business card.

The link you shared does discuss the process in great detail, however, this information was not cascaded by Amex.

For any changes in Amex terms, Amex will always update our card members and send a formal communication through email and announce it at our website.’

    ‘Thanks for waiting, Peter.

Upon checking, since you have already earned the bonus when you applied for the Business Gold card, it means that you will no longer be eligible to get another welcome bonus offer when you applied for another Business Gold card, as they of the same product.

You will be eligible to get another Welcome Bonus if you may choose to apply for a different Amex Business card that you have not held before.’

‘The terms are not available online as it is an internal process we are following to prevent multiple bonuses applied on the same card product by cancelling the card product a re-opening new ones.’

So what’s the next step? FOS?

They do spout some garbage! I would write to head office in Brighton clearly stating your position and mentioning that if your complaint isn’t resolved to your satisfaction you are prepared to go to the FOS. Obviously keep copies and screenshots of everything.

IME they are much better at resolving written complaints than via chat.

Quite possibly, sounds like there could be a few of us. Anyone else in the same position currently?

I got told on a chat few weeks ago it was a “known issue” and points would be posted within 3 months. Getting worried now they’ll back peddle reading this.

Affecting both a new platinum business card and a new gold business card. Both sounds hit within 3 months.

Have you tried calling and actually speaking to someone at Brighton?

Yes, reached spend a month ago. 3 months and 3rd statement was 2 days ago. Still no SUB. Quietly waiting, haven’t chased yet. Gold Business.

I have had 4 different excuses from chat and calls for plat business bonus.

    1. 30 days after spending required amount
    2. Bonus not showing for your card.
    3. 90 days from reaching target spend.
    4. Software problems

Today- she will call me back when talking to 1 of the 4 people who process these sign up bonuses. She could not do it manually as needs authorisation.

Just rang Brighton. They said the SUB will be awarded after 3 months mark which is end of June in my case. Weird.

3 months is simply what the T&C say to cover themselves, which is why the agents quote this. It isn’t based on anything factual or relevant.

I am in the same boat with my Amex business platinum – took out card in April and spend was achieved shortly after. I have been back and forth with amex and seems like the conclusion is (similar to what has been said above):

    1) Known issue with automatic awarding of sign up bonus for some accounts – no time frame given to fix this
    2) Amex say T&C’s give them up to 3 months to award MR points. It seems the 3 months is from when the card is taken out rather than when the spend target has been achieved (although different agents say different things).

Mine has been 2 months since spend reached/card opened. It seems unlikely that the points will post automatically.

What strategy should I adopt? I am assuming I should call them after 3 months has elapsed and ask them to add the points manually? It is a bit of a pain as was looking to cancel card earlier to recoup some of the annual fee.

Would you have been eligible under the ‘old’ rules also, or had held an amex business within the past 24 months?

Good news! I’ve just had a message through chat that the investigation has concluded and (surprise surprise) the HFP community was right and they will be posing the SUB!

Another case of inconsistent agent education and systems but the stated T&Cs win out.
