Amex Esso £5 off £50 spend – fuel only?

I have a £5 off £50 offer from Amex at Esso which ends in 6 days. The offer says in the T&Cs that it only covers fuel purchases. Does anyone know if the offer is strictly fuel only? Can Amex really see what you spend on a transaction – fuel, food, gift cards…?

First of all, make sure that the filling station you use is on the participating list!

The key issue is buying fuel. With some of the stores they use a different Merchant ID if there is no fuel purchased.
