I read this article earlier today, which suggests that I should move from my AmEx Gold charge card (which I’ve held since ’16) to the AmEx Gold credit card.
I rang AmEx, who told me that the card that I have is a credit card already. Indeed, the card says ‘credit’ at the top right of the back of the card. I have never converted it to a credit card, though, so it is my understanding that it should still be a charge card. Am I right in thinking that, and is Amex wrong?
I noted, too, that the PDF linked to from that article on the Amex website (here) notes a £140 annual charge, but I’ve been paying £160/year. Which is right?
That’s an old PDF – the fee increased from £140 to £160 on 12 October last year. In respect of whether your card is a Gold charge or credit, only you or Amex will know that!

I assume the word ‘credit’ on the reverse of the card isn’t relevant to whether it’s a charge or a credit card, then?
On your online Amex (credit card) account, does it not show your available credit?
Whereas an Amex charge card does not have such a concept and therefore has no such line item.

No – my Gold has no reference to available credit. My BAPP does.
I think this settles ‘is it charge or credit?’, then, and the Amex agent I spoke to needs more training!
