Forums Payment cards American Express Amex offers – Google Store cashback and trade-in credit.

  • 8 posts

I have £100 cash back on £600+ transactions at Google store on my Amex card. I am getting a good offer to trade-in my old phone as well. The only problem is that if the trade-in value of the phone is considered as a refund, then the total spend will drop below the £600 threshold. Will it invalidate the cashback ? It would be great if you could share any experiences

According to the T&Cs, Google will refund the value direct to the Credit Card used to purchase the device. So yes, there’s a fair chance you’ll invalidate the cashback.

Don’t use their trade in service. They are awful and will claim your phone is worth £0 with no chance of recourse.
Had to do a chargeback on my Amex recently because of that (upheld by Amex).
Check trustpilot for dozens of similar cases.
    Be aware please.

In my case the only requirement to receive the money was for the phone to turn on.
In their assessment they list 6 or 7 items on what was wrong with the phone (some of them not even true) and because of that they claim the phone was worth zero. They also claim that it was impossible to ascertain what the model of the phone was (!).

Just to add balance – my trade in went through fine and for the full (and at the time, increased) amount.

Aware of a potential issue however, I decided to try and be ready for trouble by filming the phone in clear lighting, showing it off looking immaculate, undamaged and powering on/off and showing the “about phone” content. I continued (all in one sitting) to then pack it carefully (the provided bag was pathetic, so I added a healthy coating of bubblewrap), finally showing it off with its labels.

I recently did a trade in with Googlr and when they received the phone back they said it was in better condition than they expected and they gave me £30 more than they had quoted me!

Yeah I only had a positive experience with Google trade in. Once I was paid more as it was in a better condition than expected. Second time I chanced an old iPhone with a small crack in camera lens and they paid full value as well.

To answer the original OP question, on both of the above I got to keep Amex cashback as I think they refund the trade in as a different transaction rather than the original one (reference number would certainly suggest that). If nothing changed since early Feb then I’d say you would be fine.
