Is this benefit valid for supplementary cardholders? The main account holder does not have a driving licence, we would travel together.

Yes, supplementary cardholder gets all the insurance benefits of the main cardholder.

I also think (but check the T&C) that you’re also covered even if the main driver is not a Plat cardholder at all but one of the other named drivers is – but absolutely don’t quote me on that.

I’m hiring a car with Avis soon from Glasgow. I have the Amex platinum so unsure if I need this extra coverage or if the below is covered with my Amex?

    Vehicle Cover
    £0.00 Damage Excess
    £0.00 Theft Excess
    Roadside Assistance Plus
    Windscreen cover
    £135.94 for 4 days

    This is included as standard

    Standard
    £2000.00 Damage Excess
    £2000.00 Theft Excess
    Roadside Assistance Plus
    INCLUDED

That’s exactly what the AMEX insurance is for. It waives the deductible. The only problem is if you damage the car with the Avis top up insurance, they should sort it all out. If you do it with Amex, Avis charges the excess to your card then you initiate the insurance claim yourself.

Thanks, so there is no need to waste £134 on this insurance with Avis. The car rental itself is only £74 do this is far more than the cost of the car!

I’m guessing the vehicle needs to be paid for with the platinum card to activate this benefit ?

Thanks @TherealSwissTony I have been reading the Amex plat insurance policy but I could not find the exact wording where the Excess is covered. I am looking at Enterprise for a trip in Norway and my excess is 20,000NOK unless paying for Zero Excess which is £38 a day!

I kicked myself a bit as I did purchase Zero Excess last year when renting in Canada. I should have read the T&C better. I thought the Amex insurance only covers the normal accident claim and not Excess.

@iadnv someone can confirm, but I am pretty sure I read somewhere in the Forum that you don’t even need to use your Amex Plat card to pay for the car rental.
