Hi all,
A few questions i was hoping someone might be able to help answer.
I’ve landed in my destination and IB left my
checked bag in London and won’t be here for more than 4h. Registered a case with them, got a piece of paper and was told to ‘call this number for compensation’. I have an Amex Plat i used to pay surcharges on the reward flight, and am not keen on waiting on a call for usually unhelpful IB agents. Questions:
1) Does anyone have experience claiming compensation from IB? Is it even worth trying/whats the amount/conditions?
2) Do I need to deal with IB before Amex Plat? T&Cs don’t explicitly say I need to apart from an exclusion of ‘costs which are recoverable from any other source’
3) Do I need to buy £300 worth of goods on my Amex Plat in order to claim them, or can I buy them using some other card and expense with receipts?
4) Hypothetical: If #3 is an option, what if I need to return an item (say wrong fit) and get a refund on another card. Does Amex need to know?
5) Can i claim from BOTH Iberia and Amex?
6) In the absolute worst case scenario that IB has lost my bag and I never recover it, does any of the above change? I know Amex offers an additional £300 for 48h delay, but I read a higher amount somewhere.
Thanks in advance – travel really is becoming a pain these days…
I was in a similar situation back in May. Answers below:
1. You must first claim from IB. They will pay out £60 per claim/bag. If you are two people sharing one delayed bag, they will still only pay out £60. You cannot make 2 claims. Bonkers!
2. Amex will ask you to confirm that you claimed already. If you answer no, they will automatically decline claim. They should pay the difference, but I am still waiting for it, so am hoping.
3. You have to make the purchase on any AMEX you have, they will make exceptions if the retailer does not take AMEX
4. I think AMEX should know about any refunds.
5. You MUST claim from both IB and AMEX. IB pays £60 (once) Amex pays difference (still waiting for funds, so cannot be sure)
6. It’s under Loss of Personal Belongings, which depends on your AMEX limit. Platinum is £2,000
Hope it helps.
Bumping this thread back up as I’ve just had an e-mail from Iberia with their resolution on my case.
Having read a few posts on FT I was a bit more hopeful, but they’ve decided to only pay out half of the ~EUR 600 claim (wedding weekend with +1). I could fight with them more, but I suspect I won’t achieve anything.
Question I have is, given Amex’s £300 coverage, and the fact that technically Iberia hasn’t fully satisfied my claim, can I claim with Amex for the remainder of the ~EUR 600 claim up to £300?
I’d obviously provide them documentation etc. to show Iberia has stated (yet not paid) they’d cover a bit. I’m afraid of this appearing as fraud or something, and I’m certain Amex customer service wouldn’t be able to resolve this query prior to submission over a phone call as it’s insurance-related.
Any input greatly appreciated.
