I have a question on the car rental insurance provided with the Plat card. Is it tied to the overall travel insurance, meaning that it can only be used on trips that are under 90 days? I am on long term travel and have a hire car that takes me over the cusp of 90 days (during which I have new travel insurance coming into effect) but I’m trying to work out if I need additional hire car coverage too.

Do they even ask for flight details when claiming for rental car related incidents?

Yes, they will ask for evidence to prove your trip is covered. The exact wording from a car hire claim I made earlier in the year was:

Your booking invoice, travel itinerary or any other documentation that show the details of your original travel dates, the cost of the trip, date of booking and names of all travellers. We need to see this to verify that you were travelling within your policy limits.

They are changing the insurance provider in the new year, but I can’t see this requirement changing.

@mrben – in addition to the above, the wording of the policy, including in the introductory parts and definitions suggests that the 90 day limit governs the entire policy. In respect of your last question, it appears that they do ask, but even if they didn’t, you are expected to make full disclosure if you made any claim and will have to sign some sort of disclaimer to that effect.

Thanks all. I was hoping that there would be a difference between the wording and practical application – as the hire car part also covers use within the UK. But alas, I’ll need to shell out for an additional policy (I had to guarantee the full value of the hire car on my card due to the basic insurance option doubling the agreed price, which was only discovered on pick up. In truth would have been silly to have ever risked it but I think you have 100% confirmed it!)
