Forums Payment cards American Express Amex Platinum insurance – train cancellation

  • 163 posts

Sorry if this has been answered before.
I was wondering if I could claim Amex Platinum insurance for travelling one day before and staying in a hotel due to train strikes.
My train was supposed to depart on Sept 15, but it has been cancelled, so I need to travel the day before and stay at a hotel in Manchester (before taking a flight).
Furthermore, I have a platinum supplementary card but I bought the train ticket with my Amex gold (to get the LNER tickets).

Looks possible under 1.b). You’ll have to make a claim to find out.

Is it only one train a day from where you are or there no other trains or alternative routes available at all on Sept 15th @gtellez? (not a challenge question, just curiosity trying to understand the service where you are)

Will also look into this – our indeed once-a-day Cornwall-Paddington was cancelled…with one minute’s notice!
They had already actually announced the “next train arriving at Platform 1 will be…”!!

It seems that there aren’t any trains working that day due to the strikes (at least in the app). Ideally I would prefer travelling the same day (my flight is at 7pm), but the only option I see is travelling by train the day before, since I cant drive because I travel back to another airport.
Have any of you claimed for a charge that was paid with a different non platinum Amex card?

Yes, and the claim was paid. To be eligible, it has to be paid on the card account. Card account means any of your Amex cards (I paraphrase) but the full definition is in the insurance T&Cs.

Great, I’ll give them a call just to confirm before spending the full £300 in the hotel and a nice dinner in Manchester and Ill report back after the claim is paid (if so). Thanks!

There is a general exclusion on industrial action, if you booked after it was announced. Hopefully this only means the specific dates.

    13) Industrial action which has commenced or has been announced prior to booking Your Trip.

The strike’s been called off now due to Queen’s passing.
