Forums Payment cards American Express Amex Platinum monthly fee

Is it possible to select a pay monthly when you take out the card? Thinking about referring player 2 but she would need to pay monthly from the off.

No, there’s no option to choose monthly payments when signing up. And whilst you can contact Amex after getting the card and ask whether they’re willing to allow you to change to monthly payments, and there have been plenty of reports of this being offered for those who threaten to downgrade/cancel, I’m not sure it would be offered straight after signing up.

To be honest, if they can’t afford to pay the £575 fee up front, you have to wonder whether the card is right for them…

@baec_newbie you have hit the nail on the head! Given everything we have read here in recent weeks about Amex tightening Plat acceptance criteria and regulatory pressure, calling to say I’d like the card but can’t afford it so please can I have it on HP doesn’t seem like a good idea.

I suspect in some cases it’s not so much a matter of not being able to afford the fee as not having to deal with the refund when you cancel the card after triggering the SUB!

I recently asked to switch to pay monthly after being offered a 35k points retention offer. I was told I can have one or the other, not both.

I’m not sure I implied any affordability issue in query, so a simple answer to a simple question would have been sufficient.

    More helpful, thanks 🙂

And you got a simple answer. Not sure why you feel the need to get uppity for stating the obvious?

@RonnieB you did imply an affordability issue at the outset by stating:- “she would need to pay monthly from the off”.

Sometimes the blinding obvious hurts 🙂

It’s a simple answer, but that last line wasn’t warranted as some people would prefer to pay things monthly rather than dumping things in one month. No need to be smug about it, lol.

Thank you Maples, some people just can’t help themselves on this forum.

Only in your head is that implied, could be any number of reasons why she ‘needs’ to, perhaps to invest the other £527, perhaps that’s what she wants to do? You need to be more objective in your approach.

Don’t think there was anything smug about it. Most of those demanding to pay monthly will be those who want to keep a tight watch on their finances, who Amex will be happy to offload. No wonder they don’t get any retention bonuses.
Hope Amex moves to no refund of fee soon.
