Yes, it’s not a very new requirement and people have already reported encountering problems when they fail to follow the rules. Why is it apparently so difficult to comply with such a basic term. Amex’s requirements for different accounts are hardly onerous or unreasonable, so why risk getting into an argument with them and/or breaching the terms that allow them to close your account?

To continue to protect your Account and meet regulatory commitments, payments made to your American Express® Card must come from a bank account in your name.

“Here are some helpful guidelines when making payments to your Card Account:
Personal Cards: Payments must be made from a personal bank account in the main Cardmember’s name. This includes payments for transactions completed by Supplementary Cardmembers.
Small Business and Corporate Cards: Payments must be made from a personal bank account in the main Cardmember’s name or from a business account in the same name as the company.
Joint accounts: Payments can be made from joint accounts so long as the main Cardmember is named on the account and is an authorized signatory.
Name variance: If the name on your paying bank account differs from the name of your American Express Card Account, we may contact you for more information.
It’s important to let you know that we are unable to allow payments to be made from any unrecognised persons/companies/entities going forward – as these might result in disruption to your account. All payments are subject to additional checks, and we may contact you if we need further information.

Well, quite simply because it’s not how everyone’s household finances work. I pay off my wife’s card. It’s not impossible to do differently, but it is a pain and I can’t see how payment from a spouse’s card should be an issue.

Helpful to see the wider context though.

Also, if it’s not a very new requirement, why has it just been added to the terms?

Certain people have one sided opinions on certain topics. Sometimes take things with a pinch of salt

I also can’t see any threads dedicated to discussing payment card issues. Only people’s accounts being closed for unknown reasons

The simple answer is that in your situation, if you ask/tell Amex, they will agree that you pay your wife’s account.

The requirement to pay from your own personal account has actually been in place for at least a year, but the terms previously said you must pay your account by whatever method Amex tells you from time to time, including messages on your statement. They notified people by email and started putting it on statements in July 2022 – there’s actually an FOS decision (DRN-3877417) from someone complaining that they were given insufficient notice (and chucking in an allegation of discrimination on grounds of race and gender) which was not upheld. In the new terms to take effect from 2 October, the requirement is specified such that non compliance is a breach although it isn’t a change per se.

It would be unwise to ignore these new terms. And in response to @SSS – a number of HfP posters have reported getting letters from Amex re non compliance.
