So, I have a PremiunPlus card which was due to renew a month ago – and I have two Companion Vouchers earned.
I rang in August to downgrade to the Blue card, and was told I couldn’t – and if I did, I couldn’t use my Companion Vouchers. So I paid the fee and was offered 10k Avios if I spent 3k in 3 months.
Reading the forums, it seems I was not told the truth?
Anyway, I want to go to Asia – and I know that Singapore flights in Club are limited – but if I fly from say Manchester, availablity is much more. I don’t mind going to Manchester for the outbound, but how can I get my bags back at Heathrow, and avoid going back to Manchester?
No, you were not told the truth.
The only way to get bags back at Heathrow is to book the last leg from City or Gatwick, and I don’t think they exist any longer.
Take hand baggage, you’ll be happier that way anyway. It’s not as if laundry costs break the bank.
You could probably book LCY to Glasgow or Edinburgh on the way home
Up to 2.5hrs wait for bags at T5 yesterday afternoon so @Rob advice is good…
Agreed, we’ve travelled HBO for years and love it. If you give it proper thought it’s amazing what you can get in a 55cm cabin bag and a personal item. Where local laundry services are available we use those, if there’s nothing convenient we just use hotel service.

Not told the truth as in he’ll lose his voucher if he downgrades or if he cancels? Seems like some people’s vouchers disappeared when they cancelled as per the Forum topic here – https://www.headforpoints.com/forums/topic/companion-voucher-missing-from-my-account/
If you schedule the final leg for several days after you arrive at LHR, you will have to collect your bags anyway.
The original posters who reported losing their vouchers don’t seem to have updated that thread so it’s all very mysterious!

Though that will add £26 per person APD and maybe some extra fees too, but possibly worth it if you don’t want the hassle of having to ask
It shouldn’t add anything on an avios booking using the stopover option.
OK – So I’ve just had a LIVE CHAT with Amex – and today I am able to downgrade to BLUE and keep my Companion Vouchers! So I will get a pro-rata refund of the £250 fee
As mentioned here quite a lot, you can’t rely on Amex agents to give you the correct info, but I don’t think anyone has suggested that downgrading will lose you the voucher (as opposed to cancelling).
Since SIN changed to the A380 there has been loads of availability if using the Amex vouchers. You may not need to start from MAN.

Just for future reference, the pro-rata refund stops on 2 October 2023, so you will get it this year, but can’t repeat in future years.
