Forums Payment cards American Express Application cancelled due to “duplicate application”

  • 87 posts

    Player 2 has been trying to apply for a Gold Amex since late last year but each time the application is denied before the credit check due to it being a Duplicate application. They don’t have any other Amex card. I wondered if it had to do with minimum time to re-apply after previous cards and I asked in a thread here, but there was no clear answer.
    A “duplicate” application was a bit worrying from an ID the1ft perspective. Player has had about 5 calls in the last 2 months with Amex and they have said they will look into it. The calls initially, usually go to Brighton and then are transferred to the “new customer” team in India, but there were no call backs and nothing changed.

    On the last call Player 2 was very insistent and they escalated it and promised a call back from the manager, who did indeed call back and explained that they had found a failed application for a supplementary card from 2021 that was stuck in the system and they had now removed it. Player 2 then applied again and it all went through OK.

    Hopefully useful for anyone else with a mysterious “duplicate application” denial.

    Not sure how correct the info you’ve been given is. Supplementary cards are applications made by the main cardholder, not player 2, so would have no bearing on their application for their own card.

    There are other threads on this issue, not sure if one of them is the thread you mention, but I was one of those affected, took about 6 months to resolve, never wad told what the issue was.

    A well known bug in the Amex application process.

    Happened to us a while ago, sad to see they still haven’t found a fix.

    Yes – the information given is not always accurate, and sometimes just made up! However this seemed plausible. We both always have supplementary cards on each others account.

    @can
    yes I had read that thread. What I cannot understand is that we have always has supplementary card cards for each other and we have never had to cancel the supplementary card first. It had previously not been and issue and it seems obvious that a supplementary card would end when the main card ends. Surely the credit agreement is with the main card holder, so once the main card account closes, the supplementary should disappear.

    The same thing happened to me last year and to my OH this week on a BAPP application. My OH had cancelled a previous BAPP card more than 3 months ago. A CS rep in the India office this week had no idea what was going on and asked us to wait a further 3 months before making another application! Eventually a CS rep in Brighton told my OH that this is definitely an Amex technical issue. When the problem turns up, they have to manually reset something in the customers records to allow future applications. Without this, future applications may all fail. The Brighton CS rep said that this error typically effects new customers who have had a previous Amex card of the same type which has had a supplementary card added. It doesn’t happen all the time and they don’t have an automatic fix yet.
