@MGOR – whether you book directly or use an agent really depends on how comfortable you are making the bookings but also the agent you might use. There are agents who know the country, add real value and might actually save you money whereas others are just bookers. If you are trying to create a special trip somewhere, it’s really helpful to talk to someone knowledgeable who can discuss options, helping you find the right itinerary for your needs, the right hotels, transport and the right local prices etc. which isn’t always so evident from reading books, reviews or talking to others who have different interests to you or perhaps don’t mind constant unpacking/packing or spending more time travelling than relaxing. Sometimes it’s good to hire a car and explore, other times it’s better to have a driver. Good guides can make a huge difference to one’s enjoyment as well as serious time/logistical benefits. You could also do a hybrid of DIY with an agent to plug the more complicated bits.

Argentina isn’t a difficult country to arrange yourself and the level of English spoken is a bit patchy, but generally not bad.

@jumpersforgoalposts to add to JDBs advice about the weather in August (mid/late winter), note that hiking trails can be impassible due to snow at that time of year, so may affect what activities you plan to do

I was just reading that Bariloche, about 1,000 miles to the north, has opened it’s ski resort early this year due to an accumulated 80cm of snow, and it’s only late autumn.

@JDB Thanks. I’ve been on group tours, private tours and been independent over the years. They have their pros and cons. I take on board your comment about the knowledge of a good travel agent and guide. Any advice on recommendations for an agent either here or in Argentina

Does anyone have any good recommendations for vegetarian friendly restaurants in BA? We’re staying for a few days in Palermo and in San Telmo

@jumpersforgoalposts – while it’s in Recoleta, Martí is a great vegetarian restaurant. Rather difficult to find – street address is easy but the door looks like a service entrance and you go down quite a scruffy corridor but inside is very impressive. Casa Cavia isn’t a vegetarian restaurant but has a lot of vegetarian dishes and they aren’t an afterthought so they will look after you. It has a lovely courtyard, but the inside is nice as well.

Finally, but I’m afraid still not in the right area, the more casual restaurant at the Park Hyatt (so on the Posadas side) has plant based menu including good bar snacks. It may be a bit cool if you are there in August, but that restaurant is in the hotel’s modern building and has a nice terrace overlooking the garden and the attractive Palace and the next door Papal Palace. It’s not cheap but not too expensive (unlike the main restaurant).

The other thing to consider is that in a country with such a meat eating culture, the main heritage is Italian so almost every restaurant offers good pasta and they love vegetables plus there are loads of great Italian restaurants with a fair amount of veggie dishes. Great gelato everywhere of course as well.

One restaurant afterthought mentioned to me is Comedor Narda, not specifically a vegetarian restaurant, but a big menu section and a key part of their offer. It’s in Belgrano, the new Palermo (and adjoining district).

    – it is maybe a bit late, but in addition the the previous ideas above, I have just been sent an email about a vegetarian restaurant in Palermo – Sacro at Costa Rica 6038. The menu sounds rather good and they have just added fish/seafood to it.

You’ll need a lot more than three nights in Chalten just to do the highlights.
