Forums Frequent flyer programs Other frequent flyer schemes Avios / Aer Lingus no longer allow seat selection

  • 1 post

Hi, I am an avid reader of HfP but this is my first occasion to post, for the following reason – I have in the past year booked 50+ Avios Aer Lingus flights (LHR to Dublin) and have always been able to, very conveniently, choose seats at check in. Recently, in the last 4-5 bookings, I have not been able to choose seats – they are instead automatically assigned. This is a very inconvenient change as I recently found out when travelling with my elderly mother and we were seated apart when there were plenty of empty seats on the plane. Avios are stonewalling me saying it is not their problem despite it being a material change to their booking, in my opinion. Has anyone experienced the same or got any suggestions on how to circumvent this unwelcome change? Many thanks.

I’ve booked a few Avios / Aer Lingus flights recently and seat selection at the time of booking has always been included. Granted these are transatlantics rather than LHR>DUB but I would have thought the fare conditions were the same. Aer Lingus even kindly offered to book some of the seats that wouldn’t have been included in the Smart fare when there were no pairs left. Have you tried calling Aer Lingus after booking to ask them to reserve seats for you?

Can confirm this after recent DUB-ACE-DUB EI redemption flights. Could do OLCI but NO seat selection, necessitating earlier arrival at airports and managed to swop pre-assigned seats for XL (6’5”) ones.

Query: EI cash only ( non-Avios ) flights – is seat selection available at OLCI ?

You have to call Aer Lingus and get a phone agent to assign you seats – usually at a fee

I had this a couple of months ago when flying LHR-ORK. Tried calling EI CS and contacting them on WhatsApp but they wouldn’t assign seats for free.

No, unlikely they’ll do for free as Avios seats book into something akin to the EI Saver fare type

Seat selection is available at OLCI for cash fares- seats towards front will attract a fee even for elites.

Something has definitely changed, I fly LHR – ORK occasionally and the last two times I’ve booked Cash on the BA app as a BA Gold. For my July flight I was able to ring Aer Lingus and assign seats, but on last flight, I’ve tried a few times on chat and calling but they want to charge a fee. I’ve not flown it yet but I will definitely be checking what the story is once OLCI opens!

Can I add seats or bags to my Avios reward bookings?
A 20kg bag and a 10kg carry-on bag are included on Avios reward flights, but it is possible to purchase a seat preference, an additional bag or special equipment by contacting Aer Lingus up to 4 hours before departure. Avios bookings cannot be managed on aerlingus.com, but if you need to change your itinerary, you can contact Avios directly on avios.com.

I managed to get seats assigned DUB-ORD by contacting Aer Lingus on twitter. It was an avios booking via ba.com using 2-4-1

Flew last month using Avios. Had to call Aer Lingus and got free seat selection over the phone.
