Forums Payment cards American Express BA 241 voucher use after cancelling Amex BAPP

  • 5 posts

Both my wife and I have an Amex BAPP card. We’ve decided to cancel my wife’s card as we are unlikely to spend 2*£15K to get 2 BA241 vouchers per year. My wife has 1 voucher currently. This expires Aug 26.
We intend to keep my BAPP.
My wife called AMEX today to cancel.
As expected, the representative tried to convince my wife to not cancel her card (or to downgrade to the free card)
After a bit of discussion the representative said “You must have an AMEX card in your name to use your voucher and if you cancel we immediately inform BA and they will cancel/delete the 241 voucher.”
I talked to the representative and informed her that I understood that any AMEX card is ok for paying the fees/taxes when redeeming the voucher and that the voucher is not deleted if the AMEX card is cancelled.
The representative told me that she had “been working with this product for 20 years and I am incorrect”.

    Am I incorrect?

How brazen of you! Technically as per Rob it can be any Amex, but it’s wise to have an Amex card (even a free one) to pay for the flights in your name.

Read the t&c’s, if the parties enforce what’s in the t&c’s, tough luck. I’ll add that there are different interpretations of what the t&c’s say. But so far, there has been no problem in cancelling the bapp and keeping the voucher.

Have downgraded / cancelled in this scenario several times – as have many others here on HFP. Once the voucher is issued I have never heard of it being taken away.

In theory Amex also doesn’t do name checks when paying, so you could just use your Amex (but input your wife’s name) when using the voucher, but I haven’t tried that myself.

Why do people insist on arguing this point with Amex?! It makes it more likely that one day they will decide to follow through and actually start taking away people’s vouchers.

The (current) truth is very easy to find, both here and on other travel-related sites.

really seems like a pointless endeavour. If you know enough to be aware that the voucher is not cancelled in practice (up to this point at least), then surely you’ll be aware of what Amex say in these situations.

+1. It makes me hark back to the old days of pointsing, when people kept ringing up to ‘check things out’ and eventually over the years many things got shut down. People do want to meddle some and then act surprised when what was a good thing gets stopped.
