So yesterday I booked a lhr-hkg return ticket in economy using cash for me and my wife . I’m a gold member , wife has no status – ticket type was cheapest , economy light (baggage is included)
I’ve gone to select seats , it’s allowing me to select any seat free of charge including exit (presume due to me being gold) however for my wife who is on the same PNR is saying she has to pay , even for a standard seat , is this correct ? Never flown CX long Haul . However when travelling QR, AY etc on light fares , even on cheapest fares it always allows us to book seats together free due to my status
Called CX they said she would have to pay or wait to on check in check in opens
Can’t cancel as 24 hour grace period past
A little annoyed
It is correct.
CX offers free selection to people with status only.
A word of caution with CX: if you pick the 777 the seats are veeeeeery narrow. Even if you sit on the first row of Y you will struggle because of this. Try to fly on the a350 and it will be fine.
Thanks other OW airlines which normally charge for seats give free seat assignment for member + 1 how come CX don’t , very odd idd in my opinion but
I had a diff experience. Just flew CX over Xmas and was able to select seats for the whole family. I was the only BA silver and an Avios redemption.
Have you tried selecting her seats through the booking in your account rather than she doing it through hers?
Worth a shot surely?
@ BA flyer , how do I do that then , I’m just pulling up the booking via MMB on CX website , i enter my name when bringing up the pnr , I can do my seat and then when I select the other Pax travelling with me , it comes up with costs to pre book
One would of thought seat assignment is free for all on the same pnr if an elite member
Oh well will just have to pay , if I had known this before booking I would of booked BA as similar costs
On the same topic, CX let BA silvers (OWS) select long haul economy exit row seats in advance. Whereas a BA silver on BA can’t…only BA gold.

The avios redemption would make this a notch over what the OP bought which is the cheapest ticket with very few rights (unless you have status in which case it becomes good value with luggage and seat selection).
