Forums Frequent flyer programs British Airways Club BA latest Avios Subscription offer – value?

  • 8 posts

I recently got an email using Barcelona holiday and 50k avios prizes to inventivise a subscription to buy avios. I disregard the prizes as chances of winning will no be tiny, but I was surprised to see at the highest level, 200,000 avios costs £2000, so 1p per avios, if I haven’t misunderstood. As I always get more value than that, it seems reasonable (for once). Welcome any challenge or validation

@dD you haven’t misunderstood. BA are pushing the subscriptions quite hard and I can imagine they are selling quite a lot of Avios for cash and calculating that not all will ever be redeemed, so overall they’ll come out on top of the deal.

It may make sense for you if you can afford the initial £2k outlay, have specific plans to realise the value you mention and are willing to take the risk of devaluation in the meantime.

For full disclosure, I am a buyer at the prior year rate of 0.8945p per Avios and will likely continue my annual subscription as long as the opportunities for value long haul J redemptions that I currently see on BA/QR/AY still exist.

If you can’t afford the £2k straight up then if you have an AMEX then you may want to utilise the “Plan It” feature they have which allows you to spread the cost. Obviously you’d need to factor in those fees in your overall Avios price.

I used it recently more to see how it works, I did a £1200 transaction spread across 3 months for a charge of £12/month. Like I say, this was more to experience how this works than actually needing to do it. You can cancel the installment plan at any time but any month fees already paid will not be refunded. The balance will just go straight back onto your amex.

Make sure you’re maxing out Avois Booster before subscribing for Avios, as the price is cheaper and the avios is transferred straight away rather than over 12 months.

Me too. Combine it with 241 and in F/J you can’t really go wrong. Not sure I’d find the value any other way.

Would say it’s definitely worth it for me that can renew at the 0.8945 rate, not sure I’d bother at 1p given the upfront cash outlay
