Forums Frequent flyer programs British Airways Club Best way to get to Seattle with reward flight

  • 5 posts

Hi – I’m flying solo to Seattle in Oct.

I have a companion ticket which I was planning to use solo, by ‘half’ing’, but Business rewards seats to Seattle are all taken. I’d love to pick the knowledge of this group of how best to do it.

    2 approaches I was thinking
    – Take a reward flight someone close, like Portland in business then take an internal flight (question – best US places on the west coast which have rewards availability)
    – Would I be more likely to get availability via another carrier like AirLingus – (question – can I half a reward flight via them to fly solo?)

Thank you in advance for your guidance.

    Cheers,
    Mo

Portland to seattle flights are cheap and you have to collect and recheck your luggage anyway, £47 for the hour flight is typical.

You could also enjoy the city and take a train or drive between them. One way car rentals almost certainly won’t incurr a surcharge.

You could also fly into Vancouver and take the train down to Seattle (remember you’ll need both a Canadian and US ESTA if you do that) or fly from £126.

Air Lingus Business availability is generally as common as rocking horse droppings but you may find the odd day that has availability.

You could also try LA, San Fran which are short ish hop to seattle. I would also suggest the train between seattle and portland. I took it years ago, they have an observation cart and it was a nice experience.

PDX is a nicer airport and I’ve done SEA and PDX one to the other and back by train and car a few times up to just pre covid. Car is my preference as depending which train it is, trains can be unreliable. I’ve always found better pricing and conditions picking up car in PDX than SEA at airport or town although I prefer town pickups.

I am not sure if you get a cross State border charge from carco’s for a oneway hire PDX Oregon, to Seattle Washington State, or vice versa but I’d expect it. If you can pick up a car in North Portland area part of that is actually in Washington State. So you could avoid a drop-out-of-State car charge that way.

The train between Vancouver and Seattle is only twice a day, around 6am and 6pm from memory. The rest of the time it’s a coach!

Yep, never been able to make the train schedule work for me. US trains when I have used them have been slow and unreliable.

If you do look at this be aware there’s a Vancouver in Washington State that has train service, so make sure you look at Vancouver BC.
