I’m seeking collective opinion on paying to book specific seats for our first ever business class flight, when we return from NYC in October.
Got 2 pretty independent kids who will be 14 and 12 when we fly; thinking that once they are in their own seat, they will be pretty much isolated anyway, so is there any need to book all 4 of us close together ?
Having checked cabin layout, the business cabin is bigger than I had expected so we could be pretty spread out, and my only minor concern is that we don’t disturb other passengers, if the kids do need anything.
Thanks in advance, from a tight yorkshireman.
Even when not paying for seats BA tries to keep pax on the same booking together so I wouldn’t worry too much about this.
Save the several hundred quid and spend it on something else instead!
Especially if it’s Club Suite which I believe most/all JFK flights are scheduled to be – all the seats are pretty much the same and you can’t easily interact between them anyway.
I’d put the kids in Y or PY! That way they’ll come to appreciate J one day!
We had ‘somebody elses’ 12 year old in our group of seats on a CW flight recently. Quick word with some other passengers and the crew and it was swapped to a more proximate one for her parents. Even the larger cabins are fairly small, even if split up you’ll all be fine. But ask for a swap when on board if you want, it’s highly unlikely to be an issue, just don’t try and swap into one of the coveted ‘no step over’ seats.
+1 to this.
In Club Suite, seat differences are very marginal – certainly not worth paying to select. All separate cubicles with aisle access so doesn’t really matter where you are in the cabin in relation to each other – you won’t disturb anyone.
They’re 14 and 12 – they’ll be welded to a screen anyway and are the age where they more than likely find your proximity an embarrassment 😀
Thanks very much everyone for your replies. I can relax and save hundreds of pounds.
It’s not clear from your post whether you’re doing both legs in CW but especially if you’re doing an overnight on the return there’s nothing whatsoever to gain from paying for seats except a considerably increased credit card bill! We’ve never paid for seats in CW and it’s never been an issue. Just once our teenager was put in a different row from us but another passenger was happy to swap and it wouldn’t have mattered anyway. (We asked if she wanted to swap as teenager had actually been allocated a better seat!)

Sorry I should have been clearer. Nope, decided not to go CW both ways; can’t spoil the kids too much. We are going Premium economy on the outbound leg; I haven not got to grips yet with ticket classes, but guess it might be PY from Lady London’s post.
Probably won’t even pay to book seats together, given the cabin looks to only have 40 seats and based on what Chris C said. I am a very tight Yorkshireman.
Economy is called E.
Premium economy is called W.
Business Class is called J.
First is called F.
Of course there actual ticket classes are much more varied than that but that is typical shorthand for them.
