Forums Frequent flyer programs British Airways Club Can I get a cash refund?

Currently in NY, and have a flight from NY back to London on Friday 15th. I was due to go to Philadelphia today for a few days and then come back to NY for the flight home, but a family member there now has covid so I can’t go. I therefore would like to go back home earlier than Friday – it’s a reward flight booking (club world) and I’m able to look at alternative dates for flights where they have club world seat availability but there are none before Friday currently.

I could create a separate booking, and spend 68k points and £500 or so for first class seat home as they have availability for that on Tuesday. But will I only be able to get a voucher for the original Friday flight, or is there a way to get a cash and points refund?

I’m sure this has been asked before but am aware people have been told different things by BA. Would really appreciate any advice on how to sort this.

    Thank you

If you cancel your flight online these are now being fully refunded even though it says you’re applying for a voucher – however I’m not sure if this also applies to a return leg where the outbound has already been flown – hopefully someone else can confirm. Hope the family member is ok.

Remember as well, though, you’re getting fleeced booking a one-way from the US. I’d be tempted to see if I could get a RFS on the day flight from JFK as it’s so short, which would cost you 25k avios plus £50.

On Tuesday there’s RFS availability on the 0755 departure. We did the day flight back from BOS last week and definitely preferred it over the red-eye.

Thank you for your advice and well wishes!

Regarding the flight on Friday – it was a one way booking I made on its own, as my flight into the US was with Virgin Atlantic to D.C. So would that mean I’d get a refund even though it says voucher? I really don’t want a voucher.

I’d happily book the JFK RFS but I’m working remotely during the week, on UK time, so I’d only be able to take the evening flights! Many thanks for checking though.

Yes, you’ll get a refund. I did this a few days ago, initially got a message saying my voucher request had been received then a bit later an email saying I could expect a full refund within 4 weeks.

Thank you – did you do that via the form online then?

If they are both reward flights then if you call in (ok, somewhat easier said than done buy evening US time on the US number (via Skype if needs be) is usually ok) then they’ll be able to move you to Tuesday and take the points difference.

Though if you’ve got enough Avios it’ll be easier to take the “voucher”/refund option and book yourself. Just fill in the “book with confidence” cancellation form and they’ll turn back up in a couple of weeks
