Forums Hotel loyalty schemes IHG One Rewards Cancel Points and Cash booking

I am looking at making a Cash + points booking as I don’t quite have enough points for a reward night. The booking website has a pop-up that says, in the event of cancellation, the refund will be wholly in points. The cash element is a little over £100. How many points is that likely to be, i.e. what rate do IHG use to convert the cash element? I’m wondering if it is a better way to get the extra points I need rather than buying points outright.

However many points you buy. Points + Cash simply means you are paying 5K, 10K or whatever less than the advertised points rate, and buying to the additional points with cash. The best offers are around $6 per thousand, but can be a lot worse. You always pay in dollars regardless of the currency displayed.

The points / cash is listed during the booking process so if the full points cost is say 50,000 and the next option is 40,000 plus £ 50 then you’ve bought 10,000 points for £ 50 and so on through the options

If you cancel you get 50k points back.

Which means that if you need to use points&cash, you should look for a hotel (anywhere in the world) which offers the best rate of $30/5000 points, then cancel and use the points to book the hotel you actually want.

However allegedly IHG gets unhappy if you buy too many points in this way – but maybe only if you keep saving up the points and not spending them straight away
