Forums Frequent flyer programs British Airways Club Cancelled card – refund on a major spend. Will companion voucher get cancelled?

  • 9 posts

    Hi all,

I had the BA premium plus card in which I made the 10k spend to get the welcome bonus and the companion voucher. And cancelled it soon after. Now one of the major expenses was a 2000£ expense which now will need to unfortunately refunded. So two questions

    1) Where will I get the 2000£ refund since I do not have a card with Amex any more in my name (have a supplementary card though)
    2) Will it impact the companion voucher in any way since I now have technically only spent 8000£ instead of the needed 10,000£ for the voucher?

    Thanks in advance for advise

Nothing will happen to your 241 voucher. The refund will be credited to the closed card and Amex will send you a statement – you’ll probably need to contact them and ask them to send you a cheque as I think they will only refund to a bank account if it’s under £500. I don’t know of anyone being adversely affected by this happening in terms of future relationship with Amex but it’ll probably be fine as a one-off.

I had a £1500 refunded to my bank, but it was a right faff (wish I’d just asked for a cheque!). I had to send them a copy of a current bank statement in the “document sender” page to show they were my bank details (ignoring the fact I still had 3 other live AMEX cards with direct debits from that same bank account), and it would take 7-10 working days. Then I got a letter asking why I’d sent my bank statement through. I phoned up to sort it and was told it would be ANOTHER 7-10 working days. Two weeks later nothing has come though, I called again, and the rep did it there and then. Why that couldn’t have happened first of I’ll never know!

Your companion voucher is safe indeed. As are the points you got from the transaction. However, what appears to happen in some cases now is that if you reapply for the BAPP in the future, your £10k counter might start from a negative £2k – meaning you’d need £12k to trigger it again.

I’m also having trouble with Amex refunding amounts. I even had one request to move the credit to another card take weeks. Not sure what’s going on…

It must be that anything over £500 needs extra documents sending, it’s a while since I did this so I couldn’t remember. I’ve just asked for cheques the last couple of times (more cancelled flights!), and then scanned them in on my banking app which is really easy.

I had a very similar experience. Had no idea it was related to the fact that the refund was larger than £500. I wasn’t given an option other than bank transfer (nor did I ask, because I didn’t think it would take so much trouble to get the refund).

My last 2 statements with credits – I scrawled a note on them asking for a cheque, stuck them back in the post to Amex, when the cheques arrived used my FD banking app to scan them into my account. All done at my convenience!
